  1. What type of music does he like?
He has a lot of classical music and loves older stuff, especially Queen and The Moody Blues. Also, he has a lot of musical soundtracks since he grew up around them. When we talked, he mentioned liking a lot of things from the 60s and 70s - since what you like musically is influenced by when you grew up. This is the music of his childhood. He also mentioned liking Sting's work.

  2. Any regrets about not pursuing law enforcement as a career (Updated)?
Not really. Actually, he says now he's not sure why he got into it in the first place. He was friends with a lot of the officers already and the excitement of it appealed to him but he also admits that he really wanted to do something different from his brothers and perhaps get a bit of attention. (It worked - the magazines seemed simply shocked that he would step away from the family business. Shaun mentioned to a few fans that he really hoped Ryan changed his mind because acting was actually much safer. Patrick mentioned to fans that he was just plain shocked anyone would get up at 3 am on Saturdays to go to training.) when he left the explorers program, things got out of hand for awhile but now he really needs a career where he can have a lot ofself-expression. Set dressing and design has really afforded him that and of course acting offers him that opportunity.

  3. What does Ryan think of Danny Bonaduce? Are they friends?
Yes, they are friends. In fact, Danny mentioned Ryan on his radio show a couple of weeks ago (I'm dating this 5-24-00) when interviewing Frank Stallone about "Movie Stars". Ryan also attended a recent party at Danny's house. He thinks Danny is a great guy and a great talent - very funny.

  4. Does Ryan still cope with allergies and asthma?
Yes and no. Allergies? You bet - he was really suffering a couple of weeks ago. Wheezing and the works. He did, thankfully, grow out of the acute asthma he suffered with as a child..and before anyone says anything, he knows smoking isn't a good idea but he is trying to stop. Sometimes, though - on occasion - he does still smoke.

  5. What is the best gift you have ever given someone?
Depends on how you define "gift". If you're talking on a non-physical level, then it would probably when he talked a female friend into getting therapy for something that happened to her when she was younger - and she still thanks him. Physical gift? There was a picture from the house they grew up in. His mother was clearing some things out and giving them to Patrick and Ryan - she wasn't giving them to Shaun because she figured he already had an established household and wouldn't want them. But Ryan could tell Shaun was a bit unhappy about being overlooked - especially with this particular picture his mother had given him, so he took the picture (a rather large one) off the wall in his house, put it in his truck, drove it over to Shaun's house and dropped it off. Along with that, he and his best friend (they're more like brothers) are always getting each other things. They have the same taste and just know each other that well

  6. Do you follow any particular religion?
Not really. He's definitely spiritual - very spiritual and that's really a product of the life he's lived. If he would opt for any particular religion or choose one that he feels closest to, then he would say Judiasm because he feels it is very warm, open and accepting - a culture as much as a religion.

  7. You've said previously that you'd say you were conservative. Okay, define conservative.
Okay, we got a clarification here. He looks conservative - and admits that but as a person he's not that conservative. He can actually be quite wild when he wants to be. He says his friends would tell you that - and that he does some great impressions (sorry no details at this point). Now, the really wild days are a thing of the past but he can still have quite a good time!

  12. Does Ryan have any pets?
Update. We are sorry to say that darling Riley has passed away.

    ----------

As he replied in the last questionnaire, he has a Boston terrier named Riley. Riley is evidently the Neighborhood Dog -- everyone knows and loves him. He's very friendly, thinks he is still a puppy and loves to play. How did he get Riley? His mother saw the pup at a pet store seven years ago and went back to buy him for Ryan as a birthday gift. Ever since Riley has been Ryan's number one buddy. When I asked about any strange habits, Ryan just laughed and said we could ask any boston terrier owner and they'd tell you.....and Riley has a tendency to bounce so that when you ring the doorbell, all you see in the window is this little head bouncing up and down. Ryan also mentioned that Riley reminds him of Jackie Gleason. (And he will be sending pictures!)

  13. Ryan seemed kind of serious in the Fox Family Special. Would you describe him as serious?
He does describe himself as being "pensive" and has had people tell him that. Also keep in mind that the interview was edited and they were throwing some pretty heady questions at him about really personal memories (keeping in mind that what he saw in December 1976 was nightmarish and something no one, especially a ten year-old boy, should ever have to see). In earlier interviews (circa 1985) and even when he inadvertently ended up on camera on "The Arsenio Hall Show" in 1993, he was much more jovial and usually is quite entertaining when interviewed (and sending e-mails......). Ryan is quite a warm, sensitive guy...with a pretty sharp wit to him. It's almost becoming cliche to say he's "sweet" because that seems to be the exact opinion everyone has of him, including myself. There are few people I have talked to who are as genuine and, okay, sweet as this guy.

  14. Is there a story about the scar he seems to have over his eye -- or am I seeing things?
No, there is a slight story to it dating back to when he was a kid. One of the Hollywood rags of the time actually did a story about his mother that discussed this (slow news week?). However, it's just like the stories we all have from when we were kids. Evidently, when he was three or four years-old, he slipped and cut his head open on a shower attachment and it bled like a son of a gun. Shirley was alone -- it was during her separation from Jack -- and she had to remain calm to keep Ryan calm and got him to the hospital for stitches. Just my guess, but that's probably why his bangs were so long for so many years when he was a kid. No secret missions for the CIA or other bit of excitement -- just a regular kid's kind of accident. Personally, if I'm allowed an opinion, I rather like it -- it's distinctive and gives him some character. Besides, it's nothing near the lumps Patrick still bears from his fights with Shaun!

  15. I know Patrick's pretty tall and Ryan seems to be close in height. How tall is he?
I have heard 6'0 and 6'1. He listed 6'1 in magazines in the '80s and I doubt the boy has grown since then.

  16. Does Ryan have a "type" of woman that he dates?
Ryan said he was looking for a girl who was physically attractive to him and independant, self-assured and has her own set of goals. She should be compassionate, intelligent and love children. She would also be passionate, confident and honest. (I got a whole list from him.)

  17. Does he have any nicknames?
I've heard of three. He's stated that his father used to call him "Charlie" (and hardly ever actually called him "Ryan" and that has been varified by his mom). Tiger Beat (take it for what you will as a reliable source) said that the family called him "Ry-Ry" when he was little. Also, while Ryan was doing Facts, Pat used to tease him by calling him "Harry Hollywood." I doubt he goes by any of these today, though.

  18. Okay, then I have to ask, why was he called "Charlie"?
It seems no one really knows the reason. Shirley mentioned Ryan (who we were told was in the green room) while on the Donny and Marie Show and said that Jack just really like that name and decided that that's what he would call Ryan. No other reason....

  19. Is Ryan an athletic person?
I know that Patrick has mentioned working out at the gym with both Shaun and Ryan. I believe they also play racquetball together on occasion. Ryan has also mentioned running and liking to ski. Besides, he looks to be in pretty good form....at least from where I'm standing. (Am I allowed to say that?...)

Ryan himself says he likes to run and tries to do that as much as possible. He hasn't been able to do that much lately but at one point this year he was running about three or four times a week. He also loves to water ski.

  20. Does Ryan have any hobbies outside of collecting Titanic memorabilia?
He's slowed down on collecting Titanic memorabilia since the movie came out because the market became flooded with both dealers and buyers. He also collects books (19th century), coins, artwork (his best friend paints) - a lot of things.

  22. How does he relax?
He listens to music, goes to movies and museums, and he loves the water. The ultimate in relaxation for him is sailing - to just get out there and enjoy the peace and quiet. He says he will have a boat sometime in his life but right now he uses a catamaran. He loves the beach and swimming in the ocean.

The Insider and he loved it. (I'm dating this one: November 28, 1999). He also really likes Silence of the Lambs, saying maybe that shows his "dark side" - or is just an echo of his interest in law enforcement.

  29. Are there any causes he's involved with?
Animal rights is a big one because he has a little animal of his own at home and in the future, any money we raise from photo sales and such will be donated to PETA. He's also involved and supports groups fighting child abuse and homelessness. Update: We have changed charities from PETA to child abuse. Because Ryan found himself unable to choose one charity, fans are selecting the specific charity.

Ryan also saids that his dad was a neatnik himself and, well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. 37. Has Ryan attended college and what did he major in?
He has taken a number of acting classes (and still is taking them) and studied with some top-notch instructors (and is now helping instructors teach other actors). I did ask him, though, what he would have majored in and he said probably history, psychology, art or art history because he has a strong interest in all those areas.

  38. What are his goals? What does he want to be remembered for?
Ryan says he prefers to look forward and keep a positive outlook about everything because that's how you stay motivated and get good things to happen for you. That's his basic life philosophy. As for goals, he wants to be able to look back on a body of work he can be proud of -- some great roles and performances - maybe a truly great film. Right now the focus is on acting and getting the good, powerful roles where he can truly perfect and showcase his talent. It's not that he doesn't like set dressing, but he feels a real need to get back on the stage and in front of the cameras and see what he can do.

  39. Is Ryan a shy person or just a private person?
From my personal experience talking with Ryan, I'd say it is a combination of the two mixed with quite a sense of modesty. I think even now he doesn't realize how many fans he has out there, how much they really care or how many people even visit this site. When he and I talk he is reserved but quite open. As most of you know, I intentionally try to keep his private life private. That is my policy. But Ryan has always insisted on being absolutely open and allows me to put aspects of his personal life out there for all of you and that's truly a credit to him. Indeed he has also insisted on my letting you know how much he appreciates all of you as well as how much he supports this site and what we do here. Another part of it might also be that he is admittedly pensive and introspective. There's a lot of internal thought there. He's a very intellectual guy (and I don't say that simply because of the aforementioned support for this site - although that does show remarkably good taste, she says, grinning). But I digress. Ryan is infamously shy and has always tried his best to overcome that. If you wanted me to pick between the two options, though, I'd say he's private.

  41. How does Ryan feel about the health problems that have recently befallen Michael J. Fox?
A few of you have wondered on Ryan's opinion on what is happening with Michael J. Fox. Ryan and Michael knew each other way back when and were quite good friends in the "Facts of Life" days. Michael made a point of visiting Ryan on the set as he filmed his first Facts episode. Ryan has always seen Mike as a man of real integrity and talent and while he hasn't completely kept up with things, he is truly sorry something like this has happened to someone he has always held so highly.

  42. The year has just turned to 2001, and I would like to know, does Ryan has a girlfriend or is he still single? Does he like to snow ski, and does he ever come to Colorado to do so?
Again, thanks for the question. Ill answer what I know and have him fill in the spaces when I speak to him. Im not sure on the girlfriend status he usually mentions it if there is a lady in his life and he didnt mention anything last I spoke with him. Its been a few years since he has snow skied and I think when he did, it was at Big Bear in California. However, I believe he has been to Denver at least once because his parents performed in Wait Until Dark there with all three boys in tow when Ryan was really young. (FYI Ryan has the promotional poster from the performance and now has the program to match since I gave it to him on the first anniversary of this site.) There is also a sweet story surrounding a very young Ryan and a dress rehearsal of this play but Im not sure if it took place in Denver.

  43. From other questions, I've gathered that Alex is his best friend, but is he also the friend that paints? Is he a professional painter? Also, does Ryan have any other "artistic" gifts (such as drawing?)
Yes, he sure is. I believe Ryan has a few of Alex's paintings hanging in his house. Does Ryan have other artistic talents? Yes. Actually, he is quite talented. I know he writes and did especially well at creative writing when he was in high school. I'm not sure if he draws but I think he does have ability in that area as well. He also does a lot of decorating and redecorating to his house - like his father did (Ryan has said his father was ALWAYS redecorating or redesigning something - it was a project that never ended). He just really appreciates all of the arts and creativity in and of itself.

  44. Janet at shirleyjones.com stated that Ryan is afraid of crowds. Is this true?
Afraid? That's a bit strong. No, I wouldn't say he was afraid but he is more of a homebody and a bit shy. He's soft-spoken but actually fantastic with people. He has his father's knack for charming a crowd. He has never shown any real reluctance in getting up to meet and greet fans, having photos taken and the like. Those who do meet with him on these occasions always e-mail me to tell me just how sweet he was and how much they enjoyed meeting him. Perhaps a better word would have been "nervous" since he's seen so much in his life when it comes to crowds and his family - plus the fact that he knows people are watching him, taking photos and forming opinions on those occasions. I'd be a little nervous, too! But as I said, I have never seen anyone so gracious and outgoing when it comes to fans.

  45. Hey, Ryan! What gives? Why do you shave off the goatee and moustache before you go in front of a camera? It looks great!
He likes growing it out but shaves it before he goes on camera because he thinks it makes him look older. (I told him it makes him look all of two days older.) But it seems like he really doesn't give it much thought. He did have to think about whether he shaved before appearing on Starlives but then said, no, he shaved after and is now growing it out again - and is starting to see some grey in the mix.

  47. What has been your biggest regret both personal and professional? Best accomplishment?
Ryan says his biggest regrests are 1) that he didn't go to college when he was younger and 2) the amount of money he went through when he was younger and working on Facts. He said at that age he thought it would just keep pouring in. His best accomplishment is more ongoing and on a personal level - the improvements he makes in himself every day. His biggest disappointment? Losing his father at such a young age.

  49. (Updated) Ryan is known for his sense of style. Does he have any preferred designers?

Does he have any favorite fragrances?

Referred this one to Ryan and here was his reply!

    HI Michele,

RALPH LAUREN for clothing and design.

    Hope your well

Updated: After meeting Ryan in December 2005, one of our staff members asked what cologne he was wearing because it was "wonderful". Ryan's answer: Dunhill (The regular Dunhill for men - not The Dunhill Fresh or Brown) and agrees that it is good stuff. Our staffer mantains all men should wear this by law because it is just that good.

  53. What type of museums do you enjoy (historic based on American history, art)? And do you also other outdoor activities such as horseback riding, fishing, etc?
I know he has a real appreciation for art and has visited the Getty in Los Angeles (I believe a one time one of his friends worked there). He also has a very deep interest in history, especially the late 19th century and early 20th century. Outdoor activities. Well, when he has time - a big if - he loves the water. Water skiing, sailing, swimming. I know a long time ago he mentioned horseback riding and fishing. He hasn't mentioned those in awhile, though.

  54. What is your favorite color and what physical attributes in a woman appeal to you?
I don't think there is really a color that he would say is his favorite although he does have a particular knack for combining colors perfectly - it is part of his job. As for what he looks for in a woman? Independence, passion, intelligence, sense of humor. He looks for a woman who has her own carrer and life - doesn't base everything on him. Someone he can talk to and perhaps shares interests with him. He's an active man so she would have to keep up and be patient with his work schedule. But physically, I have never seen him have a "type". He's dated blondes, brunettes and redheads. Tall and petite. It is more of a chemistry/connection thing.

  55. Do you consider yourself more of homebody or someone who has to constantly be out and about on the town?
He does get out and spend time with friends - when his work permits he definitely has a social life but I think Ryan would describe himself as a homebody.
