Hey Megan - nice story; that (bi)polar bear at Flamingo Land used to do the moonwalk; and what about You're Losin' Me by Ann Sexton? |

Glad you liked it Steve - I don't remember the moonwalking Polar Bear but the 'fondling' monkeys have somehow implanted into my brain...I kept wondering if they were a figment of my imagination, but no, I was right - monkey mountain was a bit of a Yorkshire tourist attraction in the 1980s. As for You're Losing Me, it comes a close second! |

The Polar Bear went nuts from boredom and started to make these repetitive back/forth motions that weren't unlike a moonwalk. Downloaded I Surrender - thats a killer track - was Eddie Holman in the Stylistics? |

Not sure - I first heard it on a Wigan Casino compilation, there was a musical made about northern soul at Contact Theatre in Manchester a few years back, this track really blew me away. I've got it on an original 7inch but it cost more than was sensible to pay for it. The b-side is called 'I Love You' and is also worth getting hold of if you liked I Surrender.. I think it's a bit of a tearjerker - as all the best R&B tracks are |

Yeah, downloaded I Love You & the Sam Dees one you recommended - both good, love the Dees. Limewire couldn't provide your other recommendations. Is Northern Soul your thing, then? I was into it as a young kid, but disavowed my musical past when I became a punk. Got back into it later, obviously. One of my mates was/is an Northern Soul DJ and has a absolutely kick-ass collection. I missed the Casino but stumbled upon Tommy Hunt performing at the Lion Cabaret Bar in Blackpool 1981. They had a 'two pints for the price of one' happy hour between six and eight. Me and my two mates (sixteen year old punks in full gear) took full advantage and consequently and unwisely were the first three up and tried to pull some stunts (back-drops, spins, splits, etc) when Tommy did the Roy Hamilton number, Crackin' Up, in his first set, but we mostly fell over. Tom was nice to us. The rest of the crowd, ten million drunken glaswegians armed with chunky pint mugs, were less kind. This little episode, with some fictional embellishment appears transformedish in my poem 'Westside Story', which you might've seen on Dogmatika. Ah well, enough nostalgia. Any more NS recommendations? What about Rose Batiste? |

God Tommy Hunt - I used to work on a chatline in Leeds and I worked with his daughter, she was a right character...called her Candy. She told me some amazing stories about being a kid and meeting Berry Gordy and all the Motown Legends when she was a nipper. I think Tommy lives in Pontefract, or somewhere around there? I've never seem him live but I saw Sidney Barnes play at Capital Soul Club in 2002. Not really a NS 'fanatic' (as in owning thousands of rare 7inches), but I do have a few pearls on original labels & issues such as You're Losing Me / Gone Too Long, Blowin Up My Mind, and Lonely For You Baby. As for the others they are quite hard to find, Marie Queenie Lyons is more Rare Groove but a total killer all the same. Well worth tracking down if you can find it? Try and find 'You Can't Hide Love' by Creative Source, another RG track but fantastic all the same. Oh yeah 'Make Me Believe in You' by Patti Jo is also on of my faves from that era (written by Curtis Mayfield I think?) and 'Wanted Dead or Alive' by The Voices of East Harlem. Used to go to NS niters around the north when I was 17/18 - it was great, blokes my Dad's age doing backflips on the dancefloor at WMCs in York. After that some great memories of Blackpool weekenders - my old man was a regular at the Twisted Wheel and Mojo, so I grew up with R&B and NS. Have you ever heard of Steve Davies - World Snooker Champion being the biggest NS collector in the UK? Well, not only that Steve Boring Davies has got a HUGE collection of extremely rare *****rock which is envied around the world. Can't quite believe it myself but I've heard from a few people that his collection is mindblowing... |

Jesus, I thought Tommy was dead - he is in JerUSAlem anyway. Can you libel someone by fictionalising them as dead? And him living near Ponte - I'm in Upton, five miles down the road. I might pop round and ask him if his chocolate really does melt or whether he was just trying to put a Culloden's worth of KKK jocks at ease. Candy Hunt sounds like a porn star. Tommy was in the Flamingos and they were the first band to have a hit with 'I only have eyes for you' - they were on Johnny Carson and everything in the 1950s. I knew 'Interesting' Davis was a XR3i/Earth Wind and Fire/jazz funk man in the early 80s when he first became famous; he used to patronise the Goldmine at Brighton or Worthing or somewhere like that. I never made any NS venues, much to my regret, althought there are plenty of revival weekends around that I've heard bigged up and might be worth a spin. Saw a tribute band caled Soul Survivor in the Empire WMC in South Elmsall (think the WMC in Kes and you've got it) a few years ago that were ******* outstanding although a skinful of Ayingerbrau (Tadcaster's finest) and few excellent stage invasions might have influenced my judgement. I'll download your new recommendations then. Eddie Holman WAS in the Stylistics. What about Tighten up - Archie Bell and the Drells, from Houston Texas; and Bettye Lavette - Kiss my love Goodbye? Cheers, Megan - keep the faith. |
