Manchester Music Scene

Hi there,

I am gathering info to write a book about the Manchester music scene of the last 35 years. I have been discouraged to do it by some Mancunians that think that one needs to be born and bread in Manchester to be able to even mention the word Joy Division, but I am still up for it, so, is there anyone out there who has a special knowledge about it and would like to share your ideas with me?
Please, please, be civilized and kind if you decide to reply to this post:
1. because we are writers and there are better ways of showing disrespect to people.
2. Because no one needs to put up with any s... especially when it comes from a person one does not know.
As you can see, bad experience about posting on messageboards.

Re: Manchester Music Scene

I'd be happy to help - many many nights spent in Manchester in the mid-late 90s..

What era in particular are you looking at?

Do you have an email address?

Hi Megan,

If you have a look, under my name there is a post sign. Click on it, and it shows my e-mail address.
I am interested on the last 35 years -1976 to nowadays-.
Thanks

Re: Manchester Music Scene

Great just lost the huge message I have posted. Had to start again. Thanks a lot for your interest on book, if you come across this thread and want to contribute with your memories or ideas, please could you answer some of these questions or e-mail them to me? Really thankful for that, there will be a book and it will be published, it might take a long time, though, you will be credited in book -and will get a pint if I get to meet you and you are in London-.
Five questions:
1. What is your favourite band from Manchester? Why do you like them?
2. Can you comment on the lyrics or the sound? Please, be as precise and technical as you wish.
3. If you are still in Manchester, do you know of some influential bands to come out of it from the last 3-4 years? Elbow or some other ones.
4. Can you comment on Factory Records if you know the story of it?
5. What are your memories of the club culture of the 80's and 90's, whether you live in Manchester or you studied there?
6. Is there something that unites Manchester bands? Is there a link? Legend says that all the bands share a certain northern working class laddiness, which is what I am trying to rebate, for a start, lyrics are awesome: smiths, joy division, happy mondays, oasis, the fall, they all have lyrics which are more than a lad's opinion on the world. Is there sophistication in the Manchester Music Scene? is there a sense of experimentation in music?
Any other thoughts will be appreciated,

thanks,

Raquel
