Take week end pass from Gelnhausen to Frankfurt, as soon as your off the train leave the Baunhoff and stop accross the street and order a "bratwurst mit brochen und ein grosse bier, bitte".

Then its down town and, "Let the good times roll"!! In my time in Germany I perfected all the above to an art!! Should have gotten a Medal for it!!

A little different.....

When arrived, town was full of funny-looking people. Everyone looked like the Micheline-tire man, as they were dressed for the low temps there. Only thing visuable while outdoors, was the eyes. Not even nosetips were sticking out from inside the tightened jackethoods. Impossible for singles to make "a hit" on anyone outdoors while waiting for the buss or something, since you could not tell who was female or male....

Had a place called "The Admiral" that we went to in town. Why it was called that, I do not know. No navy in town. Usually got there by some enlisted driving the scheduled base-buss. They did not like driving when my platoon was stepping on though, as we at least one time almost made the buss turn over the side while on drive. Driver screamed like mad when we did that, and made a screetching stop.

Once we got a platoonmate to drive us back to base from town instead, in his VW of a kind of "stationwagon"-type. Anyone remember those versions of VW? Anyway, we managed to get 11 of us in the car. He parked it on the parkinglot just outside of the basegate, and we crawled out of it. When passing through the gate, the ones being on guardduty just stared at us. We on the other hand at first stared at the guy owning the car, and then laughed ourselves crazy, when he the day after told us he had summertires on his car. With enlistedpay, he just could not afford getting wintertires. No wonder that ride back to the base was so fun. We scraped more than snowwall along the way back from town that night. Then, we all thought he was doing it on purpose to have fun with us, and we yelled "do it again, do it again". But evidently, as we learned when he told us about the tires of his car the day after, he was fighting like crazy to keep his car on the road instead. "Wooops!"

Must a been a square back. ..

5 passinger car. Must a looked like a sardine can going down the road. Beans would not have been good...CP

Yes, after some searching for photographs, and your help in this....

...it is evidently, at least in USA, called a "squareback". Putting imagelink to a photograph of a such model of VW, above in posts field for "website".

All that was missing when we crawled out of it infront of the basegate, would have been the owner being dressed in a "penguine-suit" with the proper high black hat, and the rest of us having long white rabbit-ears on our heads.... Those 2 guys "Zigfried and Roy" down at Las Vegas never was That good, he he he!

Re: Diseasville, Quaint little town....

I went to that same place I think it was called the Casino, I was to drunk for a tatoo, they would not do it, said I would bleed to much. Leesville was a nasty little place. The casino had Prostitutes, we had a young kid who was only 17 and on his 18th Birtday we chipped in to by him his first adventure. He did not last very long, he was out in a minute or two and all red faced.

Good memories...

between Leesvile and Polk we were ready for Nam...CP
