Message:   Has anyone noticed something interesting about the trilogy? The main heroes - namely Jack, Will and Elizabeth - started out as enemies of the pirates (represented by Barbossa) and ended up as enemies of the Authority (represented by Lord Cutler Beckett and the East India Trady Company).

"Curse of the Black Pearl" started out with Jack, Will and Elizabeth battling Barbossa and the Black Pearl crew, with Norrington and the Royal Navy or the more benign pirates like Gibbs and Anamaria aiding them.

In "Dead Man's Chest", even though both Davy Jones and Beckett are identified as the enemies, Jack, Will , Elizabeth, and surprisingly Norrington more or less end up battling each other. I think this theme of in-fighting is expressed perfectly in the fight between Jack, Will and Norrington . . . and also Elizabeth's murder of Jack.

By the time we get to "At World's End", both Barbossa and Jack have resurrected and both find themselves - along with Elizabeth and Will - openly fighting against Authority (represented by Beckett and Jones). Even Norrington gets into the act, when he aids Elizabeth and Sao Feng's surviving crew in their escape from the Flying Dutchman.

All of this leads me to wonder whom Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio viewed as the worst evil - the lawlessness and chaos of the pirates or the supression of freedom represented by the EITC?
