Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004)
I tried to see Metallica: Some Kind of Monster this weekend. Of course it was difficult since it doesn't open until 7/9/04. I just got it into my head that it had opened and I missed it. I've been wanting to see it since it hit Sundance this year. It's about the making of their 2003 album St. Anger and their experiences in group therapy. Doesn't it sound intriguing? I know it will be right up my alley and perfect for dissecting on this site. So, look out for the movie and look out for my upcoming review of it!
Btw, it's not even because I'm a Metallica fan. I just like the sound of the movie and I think seeing it might make me the Metallica fan I'm not.
Also, check out the related article in the New York Times Magazine from this past Sunday (6/20/04): Band on the Couch By CHUCK KLOSTERMAN.

I just got my ticket!
METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER | Special Preview Screening |
Tuesday July 6: 8:15 pm
Come see this sneak preview of METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER before
it opens in theaters.
Q&A with directors following the screening.
Three years in the making, this new film from acclaimed documentarians
Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky is a fascinating glimpse into the
tortured psyche of the most successful metal band of all time. With
extraordinary behind-the-scenes access, the film transcends rock-n-roll movie
conventions, trading rock star posing for raw and truthful
introspection.
Directors will be present for a Q&A after the screening.

Re: Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004)
I just returned from seeing the movie. Considering I'm not a Metallica fan, I liked the movie a lot although per usual, I could've done without maybe 20 minutes. It runs 139 minutes so maybe a clean 2 hours would've been perfect for me. But let me think on it some more. I have more to say but I will write it up on the site later. The Q&A was good. I didn't take notes (comme d'habitude) but I'm sure I'll be able to tell you the highlights.
I would say Metallica fans will definitely enjoy the film and people into documentaries and music will find it interesting. I guess I fall in the latter category. But I found it fascinating watching James Hetfield singing in the studio. How and when do you realize you have a "metal" voice? I wish I had a metal voice...just like I'd like to be a turntablist. Okay, so it opens on Friday, July 9th. Check it out!

Re: Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004)
Since I still haven't gotten around to a full-length write-up, let me add a couple of things here. I didn't think Phil Towle, the "therapist/performance enhancement coach" was good at all. I mean, his presence was a catalyst for improved communication within Metallica, but Phil Towle as a therapist was, well, wack. But clearly, the band was ready for some sort of self-reflection so they were willing to put in the work. And they thank Phil Towle for his help so they seemed to think they got something out of the experience. Anyway, see it for yourself and you'll see what I mean.
Also, I meant to clarify that by saying I'm not a fan of Metallica, I didn't mean that I disliked them, although Lars during the Napster days was a bit hard to take (there's some footage in the movie that practically made me hiss; instead I just gasped in disbelief). I just meant, I didn't know their music. But now, I have their first album, Kill 'Em All, and have been listening to it with open ears.

I will tweak it later but a month after seeing it, I've finally written up the movie. So you can read more about my experience seeing the movie and what I thought about it here: Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004).
