Before Sunset (2004) (no spoilers)

I was reading the May/June '04 issue of Film Comment when I stopped in my tracks. The review of Before Sunset said to stop reading immediately and wait until having seen to the film before continuing. It took a lot of will power but I actually put down the magazine and waited until I saw the movie to pick it up again.

In short, I loved it. I have to say at times I was distracted by thoughts of Ethan Hawke's real life in relation to the narrative of the film. But really, I was able to get into the story and, as they say, suspend my disbelief. Julie Delpy was excellent. Very likeable. One thing I didn't know going into it was that the running time was a mere 80 minutes! My favorite thing - a movie that doesn't run on a second too long!!! As it takes place in real time, the 80 minutes is perfect.

One review recommended holding off on refreshing your memory about what happened in Before Sunrise (1995) because the events should be sort of hazy memories for you like they are for the characters in the movie. Also, I'll say that pertinent moments from Before Sunrise appear in Before Sunset so even if you never saw it, you'll know the reference points.

Not that I'm this Francophile or anything, but in my limited experience, Paris is really cool, and it was fun to see it as the backdrop for this story. Someone once told me that if you live in NYC, you don't need to ever visit Paris and vice versa. Come on. That is a compliment to the coolness of both cities but really, they are so different from each other. I am totally digressing here so let me say that if you think you'll like Before Sunset, you will.

Re: Before Sunset soundtrack

Well, I saw Before Sunset again in the theater. You know when you want someone in particular to see something and you want to witness their reaction? It was a mixed case of that and also wanting to experience it again myself. Afterwards, we went on this long journey looking for the soundtrack. I had seen it at Tower the week before but didn't get it. But we were in a different neighborhood from Tower this time. We went to Barnes and Noble and then Virgin. But in the end we had to say we'd make it to Tower another day to get it. And so I just picked it up today. Julie Delpy has a charming voice. And the music is so integral to the story.
