Dave Chappelle's block party 9/18/04 and Michel Gondry

I just needed to share my excitement about the possibility of what will come out of this collaboration with Michel Gondry (!!!) and Dave Chappelle (!!!).

Dave Chappelle sponsored an old fashioned block party yesterday in Brooklyn. If you watch Chappelle's Show, you know he is really into his music and he's often hanging out with the musicians as they perform. Did you ever see that clip of him singing the theme song to Different Strokes with John Mayer? Hilarious. Then there was that clip of him telling DMX what song to do next. More hilarity.

Anyway, he invited his favorite hip hop and r&b musicians to perform and hang with him. That included Mos Def (a frequent Chappelle's Show guest), Lauryn Hill (I wonder how she's doing these days after that raw MTV Unplugged she did a couple of years ago), Kanye West (what do we think of him? I like that spaceship song) and others.

Michel Gondry is a bona fide creative genius so I have great expectations for the dvd he's supposed to put together from his footage of the party.

It has been raining pretty hard in the NYC area due to Hurricane Ivan related weather. So I thought the party might've been rained out. But apparently, they were not deterred by the weather. Granted, it wasn't too bad yesterday just a bit windy, cold and wet. Perfect block party weather, right? Anyway, I'm sure Michel Gondry was okay with it. It is often preferable to film in the rain - something about how light is refracted in by the water.

Re: Dave Chappelle

Without a doubt, I am a fan of Dave Chappelle and Chappelle's Show so I make reference to him and his show throughout this site. Anyway, here is one spot where I blather on about the greatness that is Chappelle's Show: Click here and scroll down beyond my Crash analysis.

Re: Dave Chappelle's block party 9/18/04 and Michel Gondry

Well, on the Chappelle's Show Season 2 dvd commentaries, there is reference made to Michel Gondry. I hope this means that we will still see the block party on dvd even if we won't see season 3. In a sketch called "black Gallagher" Dave is dressed in a striped shirt with suspenders and makes odd jokes. On the commentary track, Neal Brennan says how he bought 3 striped shirts when they went on sale at Urban Outfitters in homage to Michel Gondry who Dave just worked with. Then Dave says, I never saw Michel wear a striped shirt like that. And then Neal says, I just think Michel Gondry's work and sensibility are so amazing.

So, like you, I am still reeling from the mystery of the collapse of Chappelle's Show. They filmed a lot of skits for season 3 so maybe one day we'll at least see those. I wonder who owns them.

Well, I hear this dvd is complete. So we just have to keep our ears to the ground. You know I'll do my best to let you know as soon as I know and please do the same for me!

The end of Chappelle's Show

I'm sure you've heard this by now too but first a fellow Pop Culture Addict told me that Dave was meeting with Comedy Central to work things out which was probably true. Then another fellow PCA said that Neal Brennan's contract was paid out meaning he is gone and that Charlie Murphy said the show is 100% not returning and that the most we can expect is a dvd with the season 3 skits on it. He was describing the skit they filmed the day before Dave disappeared to Africa. It sounded so funny. It was called "Monsters, Inc." and he, Dave and Donnel played Frankenstein and 2 other monsters. And they couldn't get work. But their gripe was that it was because they were black and not that it had anything to do with the fact they were monsters. Sounds so funny! Then the next day, Dave was gone. So, we will see what transpires.

Chappelle's Show Season 3

I heard Charlie Murphy's interview was with TV Guide. But apparently he gave an interview to the Post also. Anyway, there is an article at eonline.

Here's an excerpt pertaining to what I was trying to relay above:

"According to Murphy, all was 'fun, very normal' during shooting. One new skit they did for the new season was one of the funniest bits they ever came up with.

'It was hilarious,' Murphy recalled to the Post. 'I was Frankenstein, Dave was the Wolfman, Donnell [Rawlings] was the Mummy. We were living together and experiencing problems, because we're monsters. But I thought it was because I was black that all these things were happening, not because I was Frankenstein.'"

Dave Chappelle's Block Party opens March 3, 2006!

Can't wait! Also, looking forward to the Chappelle Show Season 3 skits. Wonder how that will go. Also, isn't Dave Chappelle supposed to be on the Actor's Studio? Or was that a joke? It looked real. More on this later when I have more time to look into it.

Dave Chappelle on Oprah 2/3/06

Well, I don't know what to say. It was good to see him. I enjoyed seeing the Oprah skit on Oprah and it's cool that she thought it was funny. Seeing footage from Bloc Party was nice because Dave Chappelle seemed more like himself than he did during the actual interview. So I guess, good luck to him. I will definitely be checking out Dave Chappelle's Bloc Party when it comes out 3/3/06.

Just wondering why I wrote "bloc party" instead of "block party" in the above post. I think I was thinking of that group.

Dave Chappelle's Block Party opens March 3, 2006

EW got a great quote from Michel Gondry and I wanted to quote it here. Here is a link to the entire article: Uneasy Rider by Ken Tucker.

Gondry, asked whether he saw any of the tension that might have resulted in Chappelle's subsequent walking away from his show, first gestures out to the Manhattan street we're on. ''You have to understand, if I was meeting Dave and he was three blocks away from me here, people [would] come up to him constantly, to talk to him, to shake his hand, to ask for something. He deals with that very politely, but it must be exhausting.'' He pauses. ''I cannot speak for Dave,'' he says carefully, ''but the last time I saw him, I think he felt the way I felt one day when I had a meeting with a producer for a project I had decided I wanted nothing to do with. I was in a taxi speeding to this production company, and I opened the door while the taxi was moving, ready to jump out — that's how much I wanted to escape.... Maybe Dave feels that his fame is like a taxi going very fast to a place he's decided he doesn't want, and he's willing to jump out, no matter if it hurts.

I think I'll take this opportunity to reiterate how much I enjoy and admire the creativity and talent of Michel Gondry. Block Party opens March 3rd!

Dave Chappelle's Block Party opens at long last

It was so amazing. I can't wait to see it again. Dave was hilarious and endearingly earnest. Such a natural. And he's such a true-blue music-lover. His love and respect for the artists and their songs is so genuine. I used to think that Jill Scott and John Legend were kinda bland but they were so cool in the movie.

Everyone was good - Kanye West, who must've gotten his Grammy performance idea with the marching band theme from his Block Party experience, Mos Def, multi-tasking like crazy, Dead Prez, who I didn't really know before seeing the movie but found charismatic, Erykah Badu with her hair and good attitude, Common, everyone. I was actually kinda excited to see Big Daddy Kane.

Of course I was thinking of the parallels between Lauryn Hill who became undone on tv at the height of her success and our Dave Chappelle. It was very touching to see The Fugees reunited. Dave said it was Lauryn Hill's idea when Columbia was giving them a hard time about clearing her solo songs for the concert.

Dave's thank you's at the very end of the movie were extremely bittersweet. He was thanking Neal Brennan and the whole Comedy Central crew. I guess it is unnatural to have that much attention focused on you and that much money thrown at you and that much pressure to produce expected of you.

Anyway, I'm so excited to have finally seen Block Party. I think I need to see it in the theater again before it comes out on dvd.

foreshadowing

Recently, I felt compelled to re-watch Season 2, Ep 12 where Dave Chappelle quits and Comedy Central replaces him with Wayne Brady. This ep has two classic skits: 1) Tyrone as a contestant, who truly has no fear, on Fear Factor; and 2) The Training Day spoof with Wayne Brady playing the Denzel Washington role and Dave playing the Ethan Hawke role. In the commentary, Neal and Dave talk about how the premise is based in fact. It was near the end of season 2 and Dave was exhausted. He did complain to the Comedy Central ptb that he was feeling fed up. And the real exec is in the skit. Anyway, it is a fantastic episode despite the bittersweetness of it. Oh, how could I forget the return of Dave's fake kid and Nick Cannon: "He's needs a working actor in his life!"

Dave Chappelle's Block Party on DVD June 13, 2006 (& Conan appearance)

One, I'm so excited for Dave Chappelle's Block Party to come out on dvd on June 13th. Whoo-hoo!

Two, I was very excited to see him on Conan this week. He seemed a little more like himself than he did on Oprah. I thought Conan didn't softball it too much. I mean, he didn't harangue him with questions about Chappelle's Show. But he did ask him about that time. It was a decent appearance I thought.
