Life As We Know It

I really like this show. It's based on a British book called Doing It by Melvin Burgess. Two Freaks and Geeks writers created the tv show - Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah. Tonight's ep featured two Freaks and Geeks alumni: Becky Ann Baker as Ben's mother and Samm Levine as student director of Romeo and Juliet. Both seem like recurring roles. The other Freaks and Geeks connection is Ben is played by Jon Foster, brother of Ben Foster who played Eli in F&G. I'm sure there are more connections but I haven't realized them yet. I think Dino's storyline is most compelling and Sean Faris, who plays Dino, is doing a great job. I find his desire to protect his younger brother amidst his parents' marital discord very touching. The girls are still less interesting. But the boys' storylines are strong and the 3 boy characters are very likeable. I haven't said anything about Jonathan played by Chris Lowell. He is very endearing as well.

Re: Life As We Know It (and One Tree Hill)

I caught D.B. Sweeney in The Cutting Edge recently - a movie from 1992 about a figure skater played by Moira Kelly (IMHO, she is the best-looking actor on One Tree Hill, including Chad Michael Murray)who is working towards another chance at the Olympic gold who partners up with an ex-hockey player acted by D.B. Sweeney. I know, such a cheesy plot but a guilty pleasure for sure. It was funny to see D.B. Sweeney, aka the dad on Life As We Know It, play a bratty teenager/20-something. I'm sure it's weird for Moira Kelly to play a mom on One Tree Hill instead of the high school/college student. Well, time misses no one. Anyway, she is aging great.

Doing It by Melvin Burgess

I noticed that I never mentioned finishing reading the book that Life As We Know It is based upon. It was like a boy's version of a Judy Blume book except British. It reminded me of The Rachel Papers by ... who wrote that...Martin Amis I think. The characters don't necessarily make the smartest choices but they are only kids. Yes, Doing It was sort of like the movie Kids. I appreciate Harmony Korine's talent (I have said before that I am probably the only person who owns Gummo on dvd) but I wasn't that into Kids. It was so superficial. But wasn't Rosario Dawson in that? And of course Chloe Sevigny. Parts of it looked pretty but the story was so... flat (probably the Larry Clark parts not the Harmony Korine contributions). Now I'm going to read the sequel to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares entitled... The Second Summer of the Sisterhood. So it's back to the girl's version of things for now.
