DiG! and Friday Night Lights

You can catch DiG! on Sundance Channel this Saturday, 11/6 at 9pm. Yes, that's Saturday. So do what I'm doing - tape it, TiVo it, DVR it, whatever, and watch it at your convenience. I've been meaning to see this movie since the day it opened. It's only playing in one theater though so everytime I plan on going there, I am easily distracted. But, I think it's going to be a good one.

It's a documentary about two friends/rivals who are indie rockers. They are Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre and Courtney Taylor of The Dandy Warhols. The documentary spans 7 years. Doesn't it sound fascinating?

Anyway, now none of us have to worry about finding time to go to the one theater in town playing DiG! We can just view it in the convenience of our respective abodes. Rock on!

And while I'm on the subject of movies on my list to see, I must admit I'm a sucker for football movies like Varsity Blues, The Replacements, Any Given Sunday. You get the idea. I can watch them over and over again and still be entertained. So I'm looking forward to Friday Night Lights. But, again, I just haven't gotten around to it. Btw, given my penchant for documentaries and football movies, you can imagine my delight in Go, Tigers! In case you missed it, it's a documentary about high school football. Good stuff.

Okay, enough of my ramblings. Go Vote!

Re: DiG!

I have some to gather my thoughts about DiG! to comment on it properly. But I'll say it was riveting for the most part but hard to watch at times. That Anton Newcombe is incredibly talented. The whole band (I'm talking the Brian Jonestown Massacre) could really sound phenomenal. But issues galore, man...

Fascinating documentary about talented musicians, good friends, professional and personal rivaly and competition and a look inside the music industry. What does it take to get signed? What does it take to get dropped?

I already posted this under "Veronica Mars theme song" but it is relevant here too so forgive the cut and paste:

The theme song for Veronic Mars is "We Used To Be Friends" by the Dandy Warhols off the Welcome to the Monkey House album (3/03). It works really well for the show. I also heard the song used in the VH1 Bands Reunited episode for Information Society. Then I was watching DiG! and I saw footage of The Dandy Warhols, specifically Courtney Taylor-Taylor performing it and was like, 1) hey, that song I like is by the Dandy Warhols; and 2) wow, they are going to get a lot of well-deserved mileage out of this one.

We Used to Be Friends

Turns out I already have the Dandy Warhols' We Used to Be Friends in my music collection. I was thinking of this when I first heard it in Dig! but it seems probable that Courtney Taylor might have written this song thinking of Anton Newcombe. Or maybe not. It's still apropos to the movie.

Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre

If you want to hear some music by these bands, go to the Dig! site.

Re: DiG! and Friday Night Lights

Two things:

1) I just read a very interesting interview with Ondi Timoner about Dig and how it came about, etc.
http://reel.com/reel.asp?node=features/interviews/timoner

2) I finally watched Friday Night Lights. I remember friends reading the book awhile back and giving it high marks. I do want to read the book still. So my impressions of the movie...well, it was hard to watch all this pressure being put on high schoolers by an entire community. The actual acting was pretty understated. I felt like the movie itself was kind of impressionistic. It wasn't narrative-heavy. It sort of let the story tell itself. I wasn't completely taken with the movie but I was moved by the story of Boobie Miles. Derek Luke was really good. And the concept is definitely fascinating. I found enough in the movie to keep me watching. As for dvd extras, I watched the interview with the real people with great interest.I also enjoyed seeing Christian Kane of Angel fame do a cameo as a has-been putting the pressure on the QB to get the state championship ring just like he did way back when. Apparently he played football in Odessa for real. And I would've never guessed that Lucas Black, the actor playing the quarterback...Mike Winchell was the lil kid from Sling Blade. Mm-hmm.

dig dvd

I started listening to the filmmakers' commentary for Dig and then got sidetracked cuz I wanted a fellow PCA to watch some of the movie without the commentary. I ended up re-watching the entire movie. It is just so riveting. Incidentally, I really want to see the documentary about the Minutemen. What is that called again? We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen (2005) - I didn't really listen to the Minutemen but I was into firehose. And I have read that Michael Azerrad intro referenced in the all the reviews of this movie - Our Band Could Be Your Life taken from a Minutemen song.

Anyway, on the DIG dvd, I watched the "where are they now?" segment. I still hold that We Used to Be Friends is Courtney Taylor's song about his friendship/rivalry/obsession/repulsion regarding Anton Newcombe. It is fitting that it is probably the Dandy Warhols' biggest hit. And it is so commercially appealing which is what they (the Dandy's) were striving for all along. Hey, I love that song. It is universal and extremely easy to groove to. I also still like Bohemian Like You a lot.
