9/05: Work of the Director: Mark Romanek, Jonathon Glazer, Anton Corbijn & Stephane Sednaoui

I'll write more later but I wanted to say, you know how much I enjoyed the first 3 Work of the Director dvds: Michel Gondry, Spike Lee and Chris Cunningham. So I am looking forward to September 13, 2005 for the next set.

I must admit, I never wrote about Chris Cunningham. But I do think he's talented and I do think I get him. He's creative but he's also influenced by an industrial style. At first his work seems very cold and detached. Also, you have to have patience. He did that Madonna video when it's all blue, you know which one I mean? "Frozen."

Okay, must go for now. But I promise to expand on this.

For now, you can learn more at the official Work of the Director site.

Work of the Director: Michel Gondry and Spike Jonz

I keep getting distracted. I forgot to say, I wrote more about Michel Gondry here: Work of the Director: Michel Gondry and about Spike Jonz here: Work of the Director: Spike Jonz.

9/13/05 An Evening with Anton Corbijn, Jonathan Glazer, Mark Romanek, and Stéphane Sednaoui

This is sold out but there is a standby line. It would've been cool if Michel Gondry was able to MC.

TUE SEPT 13: 7:00 PM
Film Society of Lincoln Center, NYC

Sold out. Standby line day of event.

An Evening with Anton Corbijn, Jonathan Glazer, Mark Romanek, and Stéphane Sednaoui
Tickets: $12 FSLC members/affiliates, $15 general public
In 2003 the newly formed Director’s Label released three DVD collections dedicated to the work of Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, and Chris Cunningham. The discs contain music videos, short films, documentaries, commercials, video installations and other rarities. Newsweek promptly proclaimed the titles, “some of the best cinema made in the last decade.” The New York Times hailed the artists as “directors who transcend music.” And, most importantly, rabid fans sent the lavishly designed DVDs into certified gold and platinum orbits. Film Comment Selects, Palm Pictures, and the Director’s Label present a special event celebrating the release of the next volumes in the series by four of today’s most innovative filmmakers: Anton Corbijn, Jonathan Glazer, Mark Romanek, and Stéphane Sednaoui.

The evening’s 90-minute program will sample highlights including rare director’s cuts and previously unseen content, such as Sednaoui’s short film inspired by Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”; Romanekian, a short film on Mark’s work featuring Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Robin Williams; and an excerpt from NotNa, Lance Bang’s new documentary on Corbijn. Both Romanek and Glazer have already ventured into features (Romanek directed One Hour Photo and Glazer Sexy Beast and Birth), Corbijn is working on his first (based on the life and death of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis), and we assume there will be a preproduction announcement any day now from Sednaoui. Following the night’s screening, all four directors will be present for a roundtable Q&A.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Due to an unforseen conflict, Michel Gondry will not be able to MC the event. However, we are pleased to announce Michael Stipe will be onstage as replacement MC.

Officially Released: Work of the Director: Mark Romanek, Jonathon Glazer, Anton Corbijn & Stephane S

Got it! Work of the Director: Mark Romanek, Jonathon Glazer, Anton Corbijn & Stephane Sednaoui is available for all. Last time, I got the Spike Jonz, Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham Work of the Director dvds piecemeal. And I'll be totally honest, I got two of the Spike Jonz so I'd have a lender copy and a home copy. So this time I just bit the bullet and got all 4 at once.

I started with Stephane Sednauoui because I had heard he was the most talented. You might not recognize his name but you'll certainly recognize his work. He was the mastermind behind the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Give it Away video. I like how the Mark Romanek one is set up with individual artist and director commentaries but at least the Stephane Sednaoui one had an interesting interview segment and this NYU presentation. Interesting tidbit: apparently, Bjork and Stephane dated for a time. I gathered this from Bjork's interview.

So next up, Mark Romanek of Jay-Z's 99 Problems and Fiona Apple's Criminal fame.

Re: 9/05: Work of the Director: Mark Romanek, Jonathon Glazer, Anton Corbijn & Stephane Sednaoui

Well, I got totally into the Mark Romanek one and watched every single video and listened to every single commentary.

Then I moved on to Jonathan Glazer. I was most interested in the Jamiroquai Virtual Insanity video interview/commentary. But there wasn't an interview with Jonathan Glazer so we didn't get a chance to be up close and personal with his creative process which is the part I like most about this series.

Same goes with Anton Corbjin though I got a kick out of seeing the videos for Echo and the Bunnymen as well as Joy Division and Depeche Mode. They all sort of looked the same but they were cool. He also did Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box video.

Anyway, after looking through all four, I'd rate in order of entertainment value: 1) Mark Romanek; 2) Stephane Sednaoui; 3) Anton Corbijn; and 4) Jonathan Glazer.

Mark Romanek on Bubble commentary (with Steven Soderbergh)

Saw Steven Soderbergh's movie Bubble at a festival and then took advantage of his simultaneous release of dvd and movie in theater by getting the dvd. His argument is that this concept of simultaneous, multimedia releases is the wave of the future and that movie soundtracks are available the same day movies open, why not the actual movie. He also thinks people who want to see it in the theater will. Otherwise, he's happy if you rent or buy it.

Anyway, just wanted to note that on the commentary, Mark Romanek is just hanging out with Steven Soderbergh asking him questions about the movie and giving him compliments. I must admit as a Mark Romanek fan, I was entertained by the conversation.

Work of the Director: Mark Romanek

I was watching the Phantom Punch video a fan directed for Sondre Lerche (http://sondrelerche.com) and it made me think of the Work of the Director Series. I think because the video definitely had its Michel Gondry touches and it also reminded me of some of Mark Romanek's more naturalistic yet clearly cool music video nuances like in 99 Problems. So in my musings, I ended up reading a very interesting FAQ at Mark Romanek's site which is pretty cool except you can't watch the video's unlike Joseph Kahn's site where you can spend hours watching videos (http://josephkahn.com/. Anyway, I recommend this FAQ at Mark Romanek's site: http://www.markromanek.com/faq.html. You can then get Work of the Director: Mark Romanek and fall under his spell like I did.
