Jet Li in Fearless (2006)

I'm gonna try to write a fuller review later but in the high likelihood I don't , I wanted to share that I had a chance to see Fearless, Jet Li's last martial arts movie. In short, it wasn't as good as the Once Upon in China movies, Legend of Fong Sai Yuk movies or Fist of Legend, but come on, it's Jet Li in a non-Hollywood movie. The fight scenes were amazing - choreographed by the great Yuen Wo-Ping (credits too many to mention just now but let's say The Matrix and Kill Bill Vols. 1&2 for now).

Of course, a good movie fight is about the players and the choreography. So I must say Jet Li's opponents were also very impressive. In case you know (I didn't know any of them): Shido Nakamura was my favorite and I also liked whoever the Ultimate Fighter-type opponent was. He was surprisingly agile for his size.

My big caveat to this review is that I saw it without English subtitles and I don't read or understand Cantonese or Mandarin. I knew the basic premise of the story and just took it from there.

In a nutshell, for fans of Jet Li or martial arts, the fights are a must-see. You won't be disappointed. I don't know about historical accuracy (it's based on the life of Huo Yuan Jia) or writing. I kept saying I'd fast forward through the non-fight scenes, but I didn't. I guess I was trying to follow the storyline visually (it wasn't that complex). Jet Li is trained as a performance martial artist so he looks really graceful and cool almost all the time. He's a superstar for a reason. So, I guess if this is truly his last martial arts movie, I'll be supportive of it.
