The Alpine.

I feel that I should explain in a little more detail to anyone who is interested, why the Alpine failed to leave the start line of the first stage.
The night before while road testing to check the Brantz trip meter I noticed a slight nocking noise from the rear,I thought that it might be a drive shaft, but as these are hidden in a swinging arm tube I couldnt do much and anyway we didnt have any spares for that job.
It was infact the inner universal joint that broke, it looks like an old fashioned prop joint, one of retaining cups had moved outwards a little allowing some play, so when I tried to launch the car on up hill tarmac start, it snapped!!!!
I really like the idea of being there again this year, that long stage before the finish is a great idea.
I did one like that in the 1970 RAC in my 1300 Escort,we were seeded badly at no 207, even though there were many retirements before us, we still caught and past around 20 cars before the end of Keilder, although I think the stage was nearer 40 miles long in those days!!!
Happy Memories........

Re: The Alpine.

Roger,

Best of luck with the repairs. Will we see you out before the RAC this year, e.g. on any BHRC rounds?

We'll be routing for you when you arrive on our start-line again this year!!

All the best,

Jon Binns

Re: The Alpine.

I am so pleased that we will be seeing that beautiful car again. It was such a shame to see it pulled back from the stage start....but hey a new event. I for one will be keeping my fingers crossed and following your progress.I remember drooling over it in scrutineering, sorry for the saliva down the rear quarter panel!!

Re: The Alpine.

Roger
I was very dissapointed to learn you were out of the rally on the first stage,(we put it in the ditch on the second run thru, car 8, had a fire on ss5 startline, bent wheels on Twiglees and finished under super rally!!) I remember the works cars on the RAC that I watched in the dark in Dyfi way back in '71 or '72 I think it was. That inspired me to buy an A110 in '97, did the 98 Rally of the Vales, but no stage rallies in it, wife said your not taking that in the forest, so I built a Mexico instead, the Alp is still here and I think its time to get her ouit again!! Well done for bringing her out and better luck next time
