Worldwide Interest

If you go to the news section and scroll down the left hand column you will find a map of the globe...click on it and you will see the interest the rally continues to generate form around the world. This reminded me that back in the "old" days of the RAC Rally we would often see unpronouncable names comepting in cars we'd never seen...so does anyone have any memories of the lovely foreign crews that came over for the event... and maybe there are some reading this website, in which case it would be great to hear from you.
It would be even better if you came over again for the event, you'd certainly enjoy it just as much as in the past and i'm sure youd re-new old friendships and make many more new ones.

Re: Worldwide Interest

I used to marshall on the start of the Chatsworth stage in the late 80s and early 90s,and speaking of cars you had never seen I remember standing there in the cold when the last car to turn up at start line was a Trabant. First time I had ever seen one, certainly didn't expect it to be in the RAC Rally!
I think he finished the event as well.

Re: Worldwide Interest

Anyone remember the Wartburg team, what with them and the Trabbies, there was so much blue smoke as they drove through the stages. I also remember marshalling on the RAC in the East Midlands...exact location is a distant memory now, but I vividly remember seeing a car driving the stage with driver and co driver leaning out of windows with cigarette lighters to shine their way as their lights had failed....

Re: Worldwide Interest

You've got me going on one now....no especialyy about unpronouncable names, but, does anyone else remember the bright pink Ford Escort MK1 sponsored by "The Who", I think that was 1974(ish) starting from York...or what about Jimmy Saville doing the same event I think, strange how all those years blur at my age!! What price some celebs doing the event. That always seemed to be the thing to do back then. Can anyone else name drop any celebrity names who did the RAC?? C'mon this is going to test the grey matter.

Re Celebs

Judy Spiers from Pebble Mill in a Maestro.
Derek Bell with the long suffering Mike Nicholson
Martin Brundle, who was very quick until the inevitable happened.
Of course the best of the lot, Chris Serle from In At The Deep End. I forget the drivers name........

Re: Worldwide Interest

Malcolm ... the Pink Escort sponsored by the who always reminds me of the story ...and to be honest i'm never sure if it were true or not... but i do know it was driven by two policemen and rumour has it the Who sponsored it by way of being let off certain "offences"....
The Who also also did the soundtrack for the famous Video "From Harrogate" it started by Barrie Hinchcliffe

Ah memmories !!

Re: Worldwide Interest

Mark, ah yes i remember that well, in at the deep end poor old Chris serle had to put up with some grumpy old grey haired git who got angry when they got lost...how inconsiderate. I had forgotten all those other names I have to admit...for Pauls sake the sighht of the cars stuck in the snow with the helicopter shot...but as you say memories....

Re: Worldwide Interest

So Jim is now buying "dot" enhancers by the case, and Brian's "dot" continues to be troublesome...on top of which Mr Worboys memory is going...are we all falling apart..

Re: Worldwide Interest

Certainly have the holiday booked in my diary, might even have a car to drive as course car (Avenger!!). Ultimately depends on work and if I can drag myself away from the Dallas sunshine!! Putting Christmas lights up in shorts and a tee shirt isn't quite the same......

If we keep this up my dot will be HUGE in no time.....

Re: Worldwide Interest

Only to point out that this will be the fifth RAC not the fourth. You might have missed one but some of us haven't!
