Questions from a curious girl

Greetings, honoured Misses!

Another curious girl comes to you with some questions, hoping you have time and patience enough to answer. I found out about Aristasia some months ago, quite by accident, and like Miss Caya, who posted her questions a while before, found many aspects of it very appealing. Since then, I have been reading as much Aristasian material as I have been able to find and trying to make sense of it all. I do, however, have a few questions (pardon me if they are a bit ignorant!):

1) If I understand correctly, allowing girls whose primary allegiance is not to Aristasia to have Aristasian personae and participate in Aristasian on- or offline events predates Operation Bridgehead. Does it still work that way post-Bridgehead?
2) Is it necessary to create an Aristasian persona, complete with family history, which province she comes from, etc. to interact with Aristasians? Is there such a thing as Tellurian girls _creating_ personae any more, or is it that you either _are_ an Exile from Aristasia Pura or you are not Aristasian? Supposing that there are still created personae, what would be their position in relation to Aristasia Pura? Would they be considered subjects of the Empire, even if the girl's everyday persona was not? (This ties in with the first question, actually.)
3) Is there a resource that would explain how to pronounce Aristasian words correctly? I, for one, am wondering about several words. For example, how does one pronounce the "ch" in "chelani" - as in "change" or as in German "ach"?

Thank you for taking time to read this far!

Re: Questions from a curious girl

Rayati, honoured Miss Alissa. Welcome to Aristasia.

I shall take your first two questions together as they are so closely related.

Operation Bridgehead has not changed the way Aristasian personae are regarded. We should probably have an article clarifying all this! Let me try to clarify a little.

There are Plenary Aristasians and Law of Manifestation Aristasians. A plenary Aristasian is one who is Aristasian all the time, in all her personae, whatever else she happens to be doing.

If I may take the liberty of using honoured Yu-chei's words:

As for me...being Aristasian has become like being short, or being female. It is not something I have to consciously change into; it is part of what I am. Proper clothes or up-to-date music are the ways we express our Aristasian-ness. Put me in blue jeans and a T-shirt and plop me down in the middle of a Pit-slum, and I am not any less an Aristasian.

Here, a very new Aristasian gives a perfect definition of being a Plenary Aristasian. She was not intending to define the term. It is simply what she is.

A L.o.M. Aristasian adopts certain personae that are Aristasian, but in other personae (which she may consider her "normal life") she is not. This is perfectly acceptable and legitimate just as it always was.

A L.o.M. Aristsasian can even be given a military rank, but this will be a Virtual, or Acting Rank, not a Full Rank (see Operation Bridgehead - the penultimate paragraph under "Details of the Operation concerning Aristasia-in-Telluria"). Only a Plenary Aristasian can hold a Full Rank.

Independent of the distinction between Plenary and L.o.M Aristasians is that between Exile Aristasians and Adopted Aristasians. Exile Aristasians are those who are actually exiles from Aristasia Pura, Adopted Aristasians are (as far as they know) Tellurians, but are adopted by the Motherland.

Operation Bridgehead has affected this, but in a purely positive direction. Adopted Plenary Aristasians, who make a pledge of Full Allegiance are now regarded as full subjects of the Empress.

Aristasian personae of L.o.M. Aristasians are regarded as subjects of the Empire "by courtesy". Clearly they have neither the full obligations nor the full rights of a subject, since they can opt out of them at any time.

In practice, however, they are treated and regarded as full Aristasians as long as they are in Aristasia. Indeed the persona concerned is, in a sense, a full Aristasian.

It is by no means necessary for a persona to have a full family or history. This may, or may not, be sketched in as time goes along. It is entirely optional (some on-the-ground Aristasian groups made a practice of having new girls imagine various details of their persona's background, but this was really in the nature of an "orientation exercise"). Exile Aristasians may begin to remember such details; but also they may not.

As to your third question: unfortunately there is currently no such unified resource, though Encyclopaedia Aristasiana clarifies some pronunciations, and recordings are helpful (for example, the Aristasian Imperial Anthem Kinema makes clear the pronunciation of the two-syllable name "Caire").

Aristasian "ch" is usually as in "cherry" (though in some dialects it is almost "sh"). The German "ch" sound is relatively rare in Westrenne and tends to be represented by "gh" as in "slaghan" - also heard in the Imperial Anthem.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and intelligent questions. Please feel free to ask more and to pursue these topics in you require further information.

Re: Questions from a curious girl

Rayati, honoured Miss Alissa! It is so nice to see some new maidens asking questions!

I do not know if I can add anything to what honoured Aquila-chei has said! But I would like to try.

It helps me to think of Plenary Aristasians versus Law of Manifestation Aristasians with this allusion:

Plenary Aristasians are the full citizens of Aristasia. They live in Aristasia, pay the taxes, get to vote, etc. (Well, not literally, but you see the concept I'm getting at.)

Law of Manifestation Aristasians are frequent travelers to Aristasia. They have passports from other countries, but they live on the border and spend lots of time at their weekend homes in Aristasia.

And, if a maid decides she doesn't want even a vacation home in Aristasia, that doesn't mean she can't visit whenever she wants!

I'd also like to squeak in that if a full leap into Aristasian company seems a little daunting (I was extremely nervous upon my first trip to the White Rose Room) I am usually puttering about the White Rose Room in the evenings (Culverian Central Time) in case someone should like to pop in.

Re: Questions from a curious girl

Thank you very much indeed, honoured Lady Aquila and honoured Miss Yu! Your explanations have made it all much clearer.

I am glad the possibility to be a Law of Manifestation Aristasian exists. While I find Aristasia increasingly appealing, there are many bonds of love and duty holding me fast in Telluria. Yet, as I am sure you know, life in this world can be trying (to put it mildly), and it would be such a relief to be able to spend some of that time in the company of civilised maidens.

Miss Yu, thank you for your kind offer! I am afraid your evening, Culverian Central Time, is the wee hours of morning for me, but the next time I am sleepless, I will try to gather my courage and come have a chat with you.
