Yasukuni Shrine
Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the JapanLiving group: This poll was inspired by a great letter to the Editor in a recent Japan Times. Monday, June 27, 2005 TOKYO ć»Former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone expressed strong opposition Sunday to a plan to build a secular memorial to Japan's war dead that Japanese political leaders could visit without provoking Asian countries. "I have been against it for some time now. We must avoid doing anything that would cause Yasukuni Shrine, which enshrines people who allowed themselves to die for the country, to lose popularity," the 87-year-old Nakasone said during a Fuji Television program. (Kyodo News) Here is the poll question. This is an analogy for you: Regarding the JR Train accident in Japan. If JR built a monument for the JR employees who died in the accident, but not for the innocent victims, wouldn`t that be wrong? Wouldn`t people be up in arms about it? Yet, isn`t that exactly what Japan has done with Yasukuni Shrine. Built a shrine for the people who caused the deaths, but not for the victims? Tell us if you agree with this or not: Japan invaded many countries during World War 2, killed millions of innocent Asians and thousands of Americans, then built a shrine only for the people who died fighting for Japan. Is that fair? o Yes o No o I don`t know. To vote, please visit the following web page: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JapanLiving/surveys?id=1878121 Note: Please do not reply to this message.
