Message:   Paulita, it’s good to see you back here. We missed your fire.

I understand where you are coming from but we have to consider the fact that folks like Sir Paul Scoon grew up in the dark, under the Union Jack. We were brought up under Marcus Garvey, Nelson Mandela, Maurice Bishop, Eric Gairy, Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz,), Angela Davis, Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Toure), Michael Manley, Fidel Castro, (Holli) Chalkdust (Hollis Liverpool)) and Bob Marley etc. Our generation has a different set of ideas as our point of reference.

Sir Paul may have this ancient sort of exterior but deep inside under the facade he may be a real Gouyave man. You should see him at a Fish Friday. He interacts with folks of all walks of life.

Also, he has fought quietly on the behalf of Gouyave folks. For example, the principal of Anglican High was refusing to admit a certain Gouyave child because she had locks. The school had support from the Ministry of Education and high-ranking church folks. When the matter came to the attention of Sir Paul, he kicked up a quiet storm againt the discrimination. They had to accept the child. That child took the top spot in every class all the way up the road. She went on to get A levels. Eventually, she became a teacher right there at Anglican High.

Unlike some of his critic who would take the shortest short cut to the bourgeois areas like L'ance Aux Epines, Sir Paul Scoon chose to place his mansion among ordinary folks in a mixed income neighbourhood in St. Paul’s.

Sir Paul is an excellent example of the great statue that any ordinary Gouyave boy may aspire to; he rose from the ranks of the poor to become a governor general. That is enough to wipe off Depradine’s name with Sir Paul’s name.

Here is one more reason in favour of Sir Paul Scoon: Depradine represents every looter who tortured our great-great-great-forefathers and raped our great-great-great-grandmothers.

At the end of the day I’ll smile if Depradine’s name is replaced by any of the names people have mentioned here.

Yes, Peter Pounder is also an excellent choice.
