Academy game
Another season commenced at Gainsborough Trinity for the academy last night, down to just the 11 players due to injuries and availability and with 5 16yr olds in the team you would've thought the odds were against us. But every single player can be proud of there performance last night and with a bit of luck and without 2 or 3 great saves from there keeper we would have got off to a winning start, however we had to settle for a deserved point. I thought Gainsborough came at us early on strongly, but we weathered the storm and after the first 15 minutes we were the better side, going in front from a well worked free kick after half hour. Nathan Smith playing the ball behind the defence and David Cyrus heading back across goal for Gareth Ward to apply the finishing touch. Then just before the break we doubled the lead when David Cyrus took the ball down just inside the box and rifled it past the keeper. In the second half Gainsborough pulled one back after 58 mins and then equalised 5 minutes later. We still had chances to take the three points with there keeper making 2 saves from Tom Parker and then a brilliant save to stop David Cyrus repeating what he had done in the first half, also a free kick curled just past the post and Levi Maturine overhead kick went straight at the keeper. It wasn't all one way and Gainsborough had a few chances aswell. All in all a good nights entainment. So why not come down on Monday to watch us play against Nostell admission is £2 Adults, Conc £1 with children 15 and under free. We had our second academy match of the season at home to Nostell, We went top ( all be it played more games than others) with a resounding 7-3 victory. Again fielding a young squad 1 15 yr old and 6 16 yr olds in our 16 man squad. We started off well and Nostell couldn't cope with our height speed and strength. After 12 minutes David Cyrus got on the end of a cross to head home, only a minute later this time Levi Maturine got on the end of another high ball into the area and made it 2-0. Nostell then held out til the 31st minute but rarely threatened. After good work from Lutel Williams and a well placed ball to David Cyrus he turned and put it past the Nostell keeper to make it 3-0. In the 37th minute Tom Parker hit a speculative shot from 25yds which the Nostell keeper failed to hold and it was 4-0. Half time came and straight after the break Lutel Williams got a deserved goal to make it 5-0. Nostell pulled one back through substitute Ben Firth who neatly chipped the keeper in the 69th minute. David Cyrus then scored his hatrick in the 72nd minute closeley followed by a corner which was pushed into his own goal by the keeper under severe pressure from Brett James. We then seemed to relax too much and firstly a quick free kick which caught us asleep was slid through to Dave Nichols who scored. Then with the last kick of the game, another freekick, this time despatched into the bottom corner by Brett Poole. But all in all a good display, and if we can keep these players together, we look to have a good squad for the future. Final score 7-3 and the attendence for the game was also encouraging 72. next game is in FA youth cup sponsored by E.ON at Eccleshill on Wednesday 27th September 2006, 7.45pm |

Well a disappointing night at Eccleshill in the FA Youth cup we went into the break at 0-0 but Eccleshill had the majority of possession although neither keeper was really tested. In the second half Eccleshill took the lead in the 48th minute, we then had a spell of pressure but still didn't test the eccleshill keeper, a few long range shots going just over is the closest we came to the equaliser. In the 67th minute a ball was played into the area and eccleshill forward headed in from close range, Again a similar move saw Eccleshill make it 3. Then Levi had a turn and shot well saved by the eccleshill keeper in the 87th minute. But in the final minutes Eccleshill made it 4, after James Hewitt in the Ossett goal made a good save but was unable to hold it. Anyway enough about this game, lets get back to winning ways on Monday 2nd October when we entertain Askern 7.45 pm kick off in a rearranged game as both sides have byes in the league cup. |

Another academy game at home to Askern Welfare tonight ended in defeat but was definitely a game of two halves, Askern were much the better side in the first half and deservedly went into the break 0-2 up with goals in the 14th and 29th minute. However in the second half we came in to the game and started to pass the ball about more and scored through Matthew Hobbs in the 86th minute. We was unlucky not to get at least a point from the game and but for a fantastic save from the Askern keeper we would have done. Mark Pieri who replaced James Hewitt in goal in the 50th minute was rarely tested. The future looks bright if we can keep this group of players together as the squad of 15 consisted of no fewer than 1 15yr old and 7 16yr olds. Full time score Ossett Albion 1 Askern Welfare 2 att 41. Next game at Ossett Town on Sunday 15th October 2006. Don't forget to go to www.thefa.com and vote for Danny Toronczak as player of the round as he has been nominated as one of 5 players, so lets get it up north rather than it going to someone from the south again. |

Well after our reserves were defeated by Ossett Town on Saturday. Our academy side had the chance to get revenge earlier today. Unfortunately it didn't start too good when due to injuries, holidays and players not turning up at meeting points we had to start the game with only 9 players although one was on his way and to make up the 11 a player was contacted and jumped at the chance to play even though he had played earlier in the day for his under 17 side. However even though we started with 9 men in the first attack of the game, Levi Maturine did good work to go round the town defence only to see the keeper come out bravely to stop his shot. It was quite an even game and after 7 minutes town took the lead and soon doubled it after 10 minutes, then our 2 players to make the 11 arrived, after which I thought it was a good entertaining game, with chances at both ends. So we went in at half time 2-0 down. In the second half again both teams played some good football but , I thought we shaded possession, although town probably worked our keeper more than we did theres. Lets hope for revenge in our next game when due to Pontefract playing in their rearranged league cup game, Ossett Town without a game have agreed to play us on Monday 23rd October. Lets see a big crowd down and get behind the lads as we have several exciting prospects. |

Ossett Albion 1 Ossett Town 0 Att 41 scorer Ward We got our revenge on the town tonight with a deserved victory, wee battled hard and played some good football at times. Unfortunately in the 34th minute we lost one of our centre backs Tom Pick as in blocking a cross he fell awkwardly and had to be replaced, so we reorganised. Then after good work from new signing Inderjeet Aujla on the right the ball fell to the substitute Gareth Ward who drilled his shot into the goal in the 43rd minute. Several chances were made at either end with both keepers playing very well. This continued into the second half with town becoming increasingly frustrated. In the last minute a ball was played through the middle and the town forward got to the ball just before Mark Pieri in our goal, however Mark managed to parry it and as the ball trickled towards the line our defender cleared it only to see it rebound off a fellow defender and head towards the goal. again he got to the ball before it crossed the line and cleared it, this was the final touch of the game. So taking us to second in the league just behind AFC Emley. Next game is in a fortnight when we entertain Fields FC in the 2nd round of the league cup. |

Ossett Albion 2 Field AFC 4 Att 49 I agree with what Tom says above, we are doing brilliant, unfortunately we'll have to settle for just winning league though as in Mondays game we were knocked out of the cup. David Cyrus made his return to the side after injury and in the first few minutes was unlucky to see his close range header pushed round the post, just after this Tom Parker whizzed a shot inches over the bar. Then against the run of play Field AFC got a break away and lobbed Mark Pieri for the first goal. It remained at 0-1 til half time with neither keeper really being tested. Although we did lose Chris Wdowczyk in the 24 minute when after a bad challenge he was stretchered offand replaced by Scott Ellam. In the second half we started well Levi Maturine hitting a cross / come shot which hit Scott Ellam and went in, not sure how much he knew about it, but that made it 1-1. Unfortunately this didn't last too long as 2 minutes later Field restored their lead 1-2, then 2 goals in the space of 5 minutes in 65th minute and 69th minute which has to be said were brilliantly executed, both being hit accross the keeper from the edge of the box into the roof of the net. We then brought on Tyrone Gay up front, and in the last 10 minutes put extreme pressure on the Field defence and in the 84th minute a good one two between tom parker and tyrone gay resulted in Tom putting the ball past the keeper and causing Field a frantic last 5 minutes, where but for their keeper making a good save we could have made it 3 just after. But it ended 2-4 and good luck to Field in the next round. We will be back in league action on Monday 13th November when AFC Emley are the visitors as the game has been switched from Tuesday at their place due to ground problems. It was also good to see some of the Academy side that played on Monday on the subs bench for the first team in their win in the county cup at Glasshoughton, both David Cyrus and Tom Parker coming on and getting a taste of first team football, Matthew Hobbs also on the bench but unfortunately for him didn't get on although he has plenty of time on his side and I am sure he along with others will get their chance in the future. |

Ossett Albion 1 AFC Emley 4 att 25 scorer Parker Well this game started off quite brightly, both teams trying to play football, in the 6th minute from one of many free kicks that was to interupt the game, Levi Maturine hit a curler just round the post. Then in the 25 minute the game changed the Emley player got the wrong side of Brett James who was adjudged by the asssistant to have pulled the emley player back so a penalty was awarded, the referee placed the ball on the spot only for the assistant to wave him over at which point the referee decided (with a lot of influence from his assistant) to send Brett off, the officials confirmed this was for preventing a goal scoring opportunity. I was at the other end so was unable to tell if this was accurate but the way it was done seemed to suggest to me that the referee certainly wasn't sure. Anyway Mark Pieri managed to save the penalty with his feet only to see his rebound despatched by the emley player. After this despite the efforts of the remaining players it was an uphill task and Emley increased their lead just before half time and scored 2 more in the second half, but the best goal has to be the Ossett goal with the last kick of the game just inside the emley half Tom Parker saw the keeper off his line and with an inch perfect chip, put the ball into the roof of the net. Next game at home on Monday 20th to Appleby Frodingham |

Ossett Albion 0 Appleby Frodingham 0 Att 28 Not a lot can be said about this game. Both goalkeepers were rarely tested with the few shots there were just going past the post for both sides. It seemed that both sides cancelled each other out so a draw was inevitable. Next game should be against Armthorpe(a) although still sorting out date should be 29th November but it clashes with their first team game. It may be arranged for Mon 27th but still to be confirmed |

Ossett Albion 0 Pontefract Collieries 2 ATT 29 We started this game off brightly and but for 2 brilliant saves from the Pontefract keeper would have gone in front early on, however Pontefract began to play some good football and scored a well worked goal in the 29th minute. The second half was more of the same with us unable to find the final ball or shot at goal and Pontefract looking likely to increase their lead which they did in the 86th minute. Next match after the Christmas Break on 8th January at home to Gainsborough. |

AFC Emley 4 Ossett Albion 2 Unfortunately I was unable to attend the game the other night Tues 13th Feb at Emley, due to me being at first team game at Woodley. However I did get a report from the manager Steve Swallow. This was our first game this year nearly 2 mths since our last game due to christmas break and postponements at home against Gainsborough away at Nostell and away at Pontefract. Simon Kemp scored both goals and was unlucky not to get his hat trick, unfortunately after leading 2-1 we managed to lose 4-2 although the information i have is that the third goal was a disputed penalty and the fourth a blocked clearance. Anyway lets hope to get back to winning ways at Nostell on Monday 19th Feb, this will be followed by games at Appleby Froddingham on Wed 28th Feb and then at home against Armthorpe on Mon 5th March. Still have to arrange dates for remaining 3 games at Pontefract, Armthorpe and at home to Gainsborough. When I know them I will post here so keep checking and come and cheer the lads on. |

Unfortunately another academy game has been postponed, this time due to floodlight problems at Appleby Frodingham. It was due to be played on Wednesday 28th February. On same night at Ossett the reserves will host Bradford Park Avenue 7.45pm kick off. Originally scheduled to be on Wed 7th March however our first team are at home to Brigg that night and as Bradfords cup game at Wakefield on Tuesday 27th Feb has had to be postponed (due to Wakefield first team being at home that night against us.) |

Ossett Albion 0 Armthorpe Welfare 0 Att 34 We actually managed to beat the weather and get a match played at last but unfortunately by the time we kicked off the wind had got up again and increased during the game, although both sides tried to play football and there were chances for either side to win. With the best chance for Armthorpe coming from a disputed penalty when Simon Kemp was adjudged to have brought down the Armthorpe forward by the assistant. Although the resulting spot kick was well saved by Simon anyway. He also made a couple of really good saves in the second half. Probably the best chance for Ossett came in the last few minutes, when Antony Dyson was played through by Tom Parker, and despite the Armthorpe defender catching him, he stayed on his feet but his shot narrowly missed the far post. So overall despite the wind a good game and lets hope we can build on it in our next game next Monday at Pontefract. |

Pontefract Cols 1 Ossett albion 1 Tonight saw a competitive game with both sides giving there all. We started the better of the two teams and was unlucky not to take the lead early on when Hobbs had a good run down the right and the Pontefract keeper failed to hold the ball from the cross and it fell to Derminderpal Panesar whose shot was well blocked on the line by the Pontefract defender, from the resulting corner Nathan Smith headed just over the bar. A late foul tackle on Dane Murphy brought about the first yellow card of the game. Then Antony Dyson went on a good run only to be taken out by another crunching challenge. Although the keeper seemed to have set up his wall ok and the freekick was about 25-30 yds out Dane Murphy hit a curling freekick which arrowed in to the top corner of the net so Albion got a deserved lead and we were unlucky not to extend this and restricted Pontefract to just a couple of long range efforts which were well dealt with by Mark Pieri. However in the second half Pontefract came into the game a bit more. We then made a substitution as Antony Dyson hadn't got over his knock from the earlier foul so was replaced by Adam Ellis. Pontefract then equalised in the 52 minute. After which either side had chances to win it and but for an excellent goal line clearance by Nathan Smith Pontefract would've. Edward McNamara went on a good run beating 3 or 4 players before drilling his shot straight at the keeper. Adam Ellis was then adjudged to have fouled the Pontefract defender after going in hard in a 50/50 tackle with him and winning the ball, he was yellow carded for this offence. We then made our second substitution as Dane Murphy was replaced by Brett James. Pontefract then thought they had won the match when they put the ball in the net but the assistant, had had his flag up for an earlier foul and was eventually spotted by the Referee so it was ruled out. Then in the closing minutes of the game the worst tackle of the game occurred when after clearing the ball Nathan Smith was clattered and again the Pontefract player got a deserved yellow card. All in all a deserved point, next and final home game on Monday 19th at home to Gainsborough. 7.45pm. |

Ossett Albion 1 Gainsborough Trinity 4 Att 30 Simon Kemp Anthony Ryan Mike Briggs Jason Short Matt Oates This game started with us taking the lead when in the 5th minute Simon Kemp got on to a through ball from Dane Murphy and finished well. In the 14th minute the ball was headed clear of our box, only for it to be returned first time into the bottom corner of the net from just outside the box. Gainsborough then put further pressure on us with Mark Pieri making several good saves although we did also have a few chances. Gainsborough then made it 1-2 in the 32nd minute. In the 61st minute we conceded a free kick which was floated across for gainsborough to head in their third, we then tried to reduce the arrears but the best chances came when the gainsborough defender and goalkeeper on 2 occasions were on different wavelengths, with firstly the keeper sprinting back to prevent the ball from crossing the line, then the defender who had earlier headed past his own keeper getting back to rectify the situation. In the 76th minute Gainsborough scored their fourth and final goal. We continued to try and reduce the arrears but were unsuccessful. Next game awat at Armthorpe on Tuesday 27th March 2007. kick off 7.45pm. |

Well we went to Appleby Frodingham on Monday 16th but unfortunately after warming up, and going to dressing rooms for final team talk before start, we found that there was a problem with lights(they wouldn't come on). Appleby stated it would be 5 minutes so referee put kick off back to 8pm. Still no lights came on and eventually at about 8.15pm the match was called off and we made the trip home. Lets hope for a game tonight(Thursday) at Nostell. |

Nostell MW 3 Ossett Albion 2 scorers Lee Bennett & Matthew Hobbs A much improved performance from our previous outing at Armthorpe. We worked hard off the ball and did well on it, although Nostell took the lead after only 5 minutes, after this we had a lot of the ball which resulted in several freekicks around the box, one of which was well held by the Nostell keeper. In fact it seemed for quite a while that he was taking goal kicks as the shots came in just wide, or the final ball just wasn't accurate enough. Then in the 43rd minute of the game good play by oli Johnson (formerly of albion) and then received a return pass to slot the ball home for 2-0. After which a bullet of a shot hit the top of the albion bar. Unfortunately we lost Nathan Smith just after the break, followed by Ryan Osborne 10 minutes later. However we regrouped after not making many chances in first 15minutes o second half, In the 64th minute A cross came in and was well headed into the net by Lee Bennett who had replaced Ryan Osborne to bring us back into the game 2-1. However we were dealt another blow in the 72nd minute when a clash with Simon Kemp our keeper meant he couldn't continue, and there were no more substitutes, so now down to 10 men with left back Edward McNamara now in goal. In the 79th minute Tony bennett was adjudged to brought down the nostell forward and a penalty was awarded and converted so 3-1, but it wasn't all over, after good work in midfield from Lee Bennett the ball was played out wide to Scott Greenwood who put an inch perfect cross to the far post where Matthew Hobbs unmarked placed the ball into the corner to make in 3-2 with still 5 minutes to play plus several more in injury time. However we were unable to find an equaliser despite our best efforts. I thought it was an excellent advert for northern under 19 alliance football with both teams playing some good football, and played in an excellent spirit. This resulted in Nostell MW winning the league and were presented with cup and medals after the game. Congratulations to them especially the players who were prev with us, Louie Peters, Scott Colquhoun, Jack Drury and Oli Johnson. As our team consisted of a 15 yr old 3 16yr olds and 2 who had just turned 17 in the last mth, if we can keep these players we will be pushing for the title next season. Still one game remaining against Appleby Frodingham, no date of match arranged, but could be switched to our ground will put it on forum once known. DONT FORGET PRESENTATION & RACE NIGHT ON SATURDAY 7.30PM AT OSSETT C & AC everyone welcome |
