RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

After having Matt Ambrose phone me regarding helping at the Dinghy show, I was wondering why the catamaran classes are not boycotting the show?, surely after the way the RYA and international associations have treated catamaran classes (exclusion from the olympics)we should boycott the show. I think this would have a greater effect than signing any petition.
Why has the Dart18 commitee agreed to take part in the show?
What is the consensus of the members of the Dart 18 association?
Perhaps all catamaran classes should withdraw from the RYA altogether, Maybe hold their own sort of show at one of the large sailing clubs where people can not only see the boats but try them.

Re: RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

Rather than a boycott whay don't you order a protest tee shirt which reads 'Cats too fasts for the Olympics'. They are available from Swell catamarans maker of the Spitfire etc. Contact Henry White on henry@lodaywhite.com tee shirt £15 rugby shirt £25

Re: Re: RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

Things have moved on and the RYA have been very receptive of UKCRA's concerns of late. It is now ISAF who are being lobbied to reverse the decisions made at the end of last year and indeed it is the RYA who are taking the lead on this. Therefore the Dinghy Show and our presence there will continue as normal. It would be appreciated if members would respect this and not undo the very hard work that has gone on behind the scenes by UKCRA representatives.

UKCRA's policy is to work with the RYA where ever possible and do things independently where not. Furtunately the areas of common interest are growing and now also include entry level catamarans.

UKIDA committee have considered the situation and in this case fully endorse the views and actions of UKCRA.

Re: RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

Not sure you did upset the apple cart Shean - I tend to agree with your initial view. Although not totally up to speed with the current situation I do feel the RYA got it wrong to start with, and to let them think that "we all love them again" because they give the appearance of looking like they are now trying to help, plays right into their hands of ensuring theykeep our individual, class association and in some case club fees.

However that is probabley a sceptical view!!

See you at the weekend shean (good call last weekend - 3 races this weekend)

Re: RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

Whilst i'm not a dart sailor , I've encouraged many to , I do however race cats , its refreshing to see someone is still talking of this debacle ,

Has the RYA actually turned round and said they would vote for a catamaran in the olympics if there's a chance (is the chance of another vote even realistic ? ) , a statement saying so would silence my scepticism as I have the same view as Sean above.

Just another sceptic !

Re: RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

The way to go is to crowd out the event with cat sailors to show how popular we are.
If we boycott it everyone will just think cat sailing is dying off which is just so wrong.
We (WHIC) are currently getting more enquiries for multihull insurance quotes than ever before so it certainly seems very healthy.

ps new WHIC website coming in the next couple of months!

Re: RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

If you are looking for insurance I would really recommed Noble. They provide an excellant service, no quibbles etc. Be wary of going for the cheaper option - as they say you get what you pay for. This post does not reflect any opinion regarding WHIC!

Re: RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

Agree with Lloydy - flood them with Cat sailors, all wearing T-shirts so they know who we are.

Understand Barry's scepticism, but RYA have put their head above the parapet in their letter to the ISAF, so benefit of the doubt..

About time you sorted that website, David, current one must be mid-nineties?!

Re: RYA Dinghy show, boycott??

As someone with a foot in the Dart camp as well as other classes, I must admit I am highly sceptical of anything the RYA does. However, totally agree with Lloydy that we should make cat sailing as visible as possible at the Dinghy Show. All the cat classes should work together. There is no longer room for the 'my cat is better than your cat' mentality.

BHCCA are having their largest stand ever and really looking to increase the number of youngsters that start sailing in cats.

UKCRA are also holding a number of open multihull events and a national championships at Bala Cat Club for under 21's in August. This will benefit all cat classes in the future and guarantee the future of our exciting sport.

If you know of any youngsters interested in cat sailing please send them to the Hobie stand. Tghere are 6 regional cat introduction weekends planned for this year where they can learn how to sail Hobie Twixxys, Topax 14CX's and Dart 16's. There is also a full program of training and events, many of them open to all cats.

Look forward to seeing you at the show wearing your cat t-shirts with pride.
