How sensible is it to start off with a catamaran for your first sailing boat. I live on an estuary in west Wales. What size? I want it for my self and two young teenage sons. They were recommended for being able to sail in shallower waters. Is this true. Do they dismantle or do the two hulls always stay fixed apart?
Ideally i need something light that could be dismantled.

Re: Newbie

John,

I suggest finding a local sailing club and posting a notice saying your inexperianced but keen to start sailing and offer yourself as crew. Most med / large clubs run some sort of training but in addition there are plenty of RYA centres (www.rya.org.uk) around.

With boat choice I dont think initially it matters as long as its safe and stable although I certainly wouldnt recoment going out on any boat without some level of training and or someone with experiance with you to start with. I hate to say it but the Dart 16 offers a great introduction to cat sailing cetrtainly for the first season or 2.

Most cats can be dimantled but unless you have a long wheel base van id stick to trailing them which can be done with the hulls intact (the dart 15 being the exception to this).

So in all get yourself down to a local club and meet the menbers most of us are very enthusiastic about the sport and will hopefully give you the guidance you need. Good Luck

Re: Newbie

Thank Maswep for your reply. We have done a little training on the Welsh Harp lake in London. But I will see what clubs there are locally.

Incidently why do you 'hate to recomment the Dart 16'??

Re: Newbie

John, I'm in a similar position to you. I've just done my RYA 1&2 with the aim of getting myself into cat sailing.

The Dart 16 is made from rotomolded plastic as opposed to fibreglass. This makes it very tough but apperently also a bit heavy, a bit flexy and difficult to repair if you do manage to damage it.

This summer I'll probably be sailing on the clubs Dart 16 and then next year look to buy myself a more tradional fibreglass cat but who knows - I might prefer the 'plastic fantastic'!

Re: Newbie

The hate to mention is a bit tounge in cheek to be honest ive eased 2 of my freinds both into cat saiing via dart 16's. Ive only been sailing cats for 12 months but fortunately I was lucky enough to have years of other saiing experiance behined me. I did however start saiing by crewing for someone else at my club.

Id go with the Dart 16 but renember when youve outgrown that theres realy only one way to go, come and oin us with an 18.
