main halyard

Hi - I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts on the correct line to use for the main halyard. I know the guides say 5.5mm but this is too small for my mast slot and it comes out.

What size do you use and what type - is there any need for a more expensive non stretch line. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Re: main halyard

Since the main is hauled up, but not not held up, by the halyard, I don't see much point in using anything expensive unless you are a super keen racer wanting the lightest possible material. I guess that non stretch could make getting the main off the mast hook easier when taking the main down, which might be important in a storm at sea?
Strange that your 5.5 main halyard comes out of the slot - the jib halyard is 3.5 min and I have never come across even that escaping from the slot.
