Dart weigh in?

My crew has a set of race car corner weight scales. He has offered to bring these to the nationals so if anyone has a desire to know the all up weight of their dart just come and ask and we will stick you on the scales. Might prove interesting?

Re: Dart weigh in?

Hi
My dart is a little light at the moment.
But don't worry when I get on it, it's sure to sink !

So instead of scales to weigh my boat.
Can I have a couple pof dozen of hydrogen filled balloons to tie to my harness?

Re: Dart weigh in?

Im not sure if I will be sailing this weekend. If I do it will be with a very lightweight crew. As for boat weights, is there a lower limit? Is there an upper limit?

Re: Dart weigh in?

I would be interested to weigh old 316 (the most vintage in the active race fleet as far as I know)

I am sure it is well heavy, and that accounts for our average performance !

There must be data on all up weight somewhere, ie not just individual hulls (I believe around 45kg per hull?) but fully rigged.......calling all anoraks, please help !)

Re: Dart weigh in?

Tom. Im sure we can set the corner weights on your car as well. It will cost you beer and will mean you have to attend the nationals!

Chris. I thought each hull was about 70kg but I could have immagined that!

What about filling the hulls and mast with helium, thats got to make all the difference????? Trying to shout "Starboard" with a lung full of helium would be be so much fun!

Re: Dart weigh in?

It should be interesting, I must admit Ive never weighed a complete boat in one piece. We have weighed hulls and masts before and can tell you that 99% of hulls are between 38 and 43 kilos,(there was a heavy batch in 1990 that were a lot lot more but other than that they are fairly consistant) 40 is the target weight currently to my knowledge. Masts are usually between 17 and 20 kilos - At 17 they tend to break and 20 are a bit stiff so the best have usually been 18-18.5. Beams are very similar but have known up to a kilo variance on the front beam. Battens can also vary a lot - yes I weigh mine! What type of ropes do you use? Again the ones that soak up water can add a couple of kilos.Personally I prefer a heavy mainsheet. Ive got 2 boats at the Nationals and would expect the one I sail to be about 3 Kgs lighter than the other one (mainly due to battens, ropes and hulls) There is no class minimum or maximum weight- but all parts must be in accordance with the rules- so some you can change and some its the luck of the draw. The SCHRS has weighed the Dart officially at 136 Kgs so that is the official all up sailing weight. If they are all heavier we can get the boat rating changed"!

Re: Dart weigh in?

We will of course be offering to weigh helms and crews too. I bet there are not so many takers for that!
So if I were to keep within the rules (and could really be bothered) is there anything to stop me re-working various components to make my boat lighter?
Or would I be better off getting fitter, losing some weight and spending more time on the water????
