Single Handed and handicap

Is anyone else struggleing in a hanycap fleet when the air is light? I know the rules state when singlehanded we canot use the jib but is this sensible?

Unfortunately the handicap ratings are averages over a full range of wind conditions, so whereas you may struggle to be competitive in light and very strong winds, you should be able to make up for it in the mid range. If you took out a jib, then your rating would become very different - I doubt if a value has ever been calculated for the singlehanded with 2 sails configuration.

Also, except in the very lightest stuff when a jib will really help upwind too, you will probably be doing OK upwind, but lose massively downwind. Once the wind gets up enough for you to get your windward hull out of the water then you will start to fly upwind, and sail high too. But make the most of it, because downwind may still be relatively hard on you.

You do not say if you are sailing against just other cats, or monohulls as well. However, even a Dart with jib has a very different performance profile from other cats and monohulls over the full range of winds. On several light wind days I recall the Darts, F18s (who started 5 mins ahead of us) and the RS400s (starting 5 mins behind us) all getting to the windward mark together. After that, of course, the asymmetrics left the Darts for dead...

Then there was the mixed Cat race at Stoke's Bay when the wind went round 90 degrees and increased to F6, turning windward/leeward to reach/reach. The Darts just tore past the struggling (and pitchpoling) bigger cats.

Re: Single Handed and handicap

I saw you out there singlehanded with your jib in the seccond race. You looked to be doing very well indeed, did it really make all the difference?

Are you coming out to play on Wednesday?

Re: Single Handed and handicap

Thats the issue and the source of my post. I noticed a massive difference in performance. Upwind I was able to make so much more ground than in the first race and yes ill be there!

For the post above we race in a mixed handicap fleet with some other cats where the courses usualy have a big beat little reach and long run ie not for the cats.

Has anyone else heard of a handicap rating for single handed with jib? Its seems a little unfair we cant make use of the jib.
