History program

Hi all! We have a wonderful opportunity for homeschoolers and their
families - in conjunction with the Northeast Georgia History Center
in Gainesville - to participate in a history program with several
World War II veterans. We have arranged for 5 veterans to come on
Tuesday, August 19th from 10 - 12. We will be meeting in the Sports
Hall of Fame room at the history center.

The veterans who have volunteered to speak are as follows:

· Frank Delong—A Lieutenant in WWII; he flew missions over Normandy
during the time around D Day and on D Day

· Susie Harris—a Lieutenant in WWII; she was a nurse on the Pacific
front

· Frank Hoell—a Lieutenant in WWII; participated in the invasion of
Okinawa

· John Jacobs, Jr.—a Captain in WWII; saw action in the Normandy
region

· Fran Johnson—a Sergeant in WWII; one of General Dwight D.
Eisenhower's secretary corps

In addition to the veterans sharing some of their experiences with
us, there will also be some WW II memorabilia on display. There will
be time to ask questions & speak with them personally afterwards if
you so wish. The history center has graciously allowed us to use the
room without cost, and has even reduced the admission prices for
families for this program. In addition to this, you will also be
free to tour the museum afterwards if you would like! It's great!
(The Administrative Coordinator has said that you are welcome to go
get lunch and return to tour the museum afterwards if need be.)
Admission is as follows:

History Center members: free
Adults: $5
Children: School-aged children $1 (younger children free)

We are thrilled to be able to do something like this with a group of
people that served during this important time in history. Their
generation is quickly disappearing and we (personally)want our
children to understand the importance of what they did. If all goes
well, we hope this will be the first in a series of homeschool
programs covering different historical eras and wars - moving
forward in history to Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm.

If you are interested in attending, PLEASE e-mail me and let me know
so we can get a rough count of how many chairs to set up in the
room. Just pay at the door when you come. E-mail or call with any
questions or suggestions as well. Hope to see you there - we are
looking forward to it!

Re: History program

We have had a wonderful response to the history program on WWII at
the Northeast Georgia History Center on August 19th! If you are planning on
attending we wanted to encourage you to share with your children a
brief history of America's entry into WWII, who were our allies and
who we were fighting, where we fought,etc... Anything you can learn
before coming will make the veteran's stories richer for them!!

Also, in organizing this program, many people have shared their
family stories with us of relatives who served during WWII and it
got us thinking about doing something special with these stories. We
are going to set up a few tables in the back of the room for anyone
who would like to bring family pictures, memorablilia, etc to share
with the other families. If you have anyone in your family that
served during WWII (miltary pictures, medals, letters home, etc.) or
family members that supported them on the homefront (Victory
gardens, Rosie the Riveters, ration booklets, etc.) please feel free
to bring those as well! I have my parents trying to unearth old
pictures from boxes stored away down in Florida myself! : ) Please
label your pictures/items with your name and your family member's
name if you can. We are looking forward to seeing everyone! E-mail
or call with any questions.
