Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

I was not as taken with this book as you were. Where you felt the narrative was tight and focused, I thought she rambled quite a bit, especially in the beginning of the book. 300 pages in I was still unsure what the point was.

In short, it was a chore getting through this book - not quite so bad as Vellum, but still a chore.

There's no question that this is a strange book. I think one reason why Thomas enjoyed it so much, and why I enjoyed it so much, is exactly because it's different and because it's fun. It reminds me, in some ways, of Terry Pratchett where nothing makes sense until all of a sudden things make sense.

I'm not sure I'd want to read books like this all the time. It takes a very long time for a real protagonist to develop, and for a real story goal to become clear. I think fans of Tristram Shandy would like this book--and it is literary. If you're plot-centered, this book might not have immediate appeal.

I'm going to come down against it. Although it was quirky and had the possibility to be extremely cool, by the time I was a couple hundred pages in, I felt like I was wading through a 12-book tax law encyclopaedia.

It's certainly not for everyone. It seems to be one of those books with no grey area. You either love it or can't stand it. To a lesser degree I've seen the same reactions to Stephenson's Baroque Cycle.

I enjoyed this book primarily for the writing style which to me seemed reminiscent of the victorian era. I not only read much fantasy, but also many classics from Sir Walter Scott to the Bronte sisters. I felt the style complimented the historic time and place within the story.
