Two Classic Glen Cook novels back in print
You're probably aware of this already, but I thought I should bring this up...two of Glen Cook's novels are back in circulation. First off,it's "Sweet Silver Blues" which introudced Garrett, a Raymond Chandler styled private detective in a fantasy inspired landscape. Meaning there are dwarves and an elf and even a dead guy that Garrett often consults with. If the last sounds familiar, then its because Jim Butcher's Dresden character has a "dead" guy very similar to the one Garrett meets...well, maybe not TOO similar.(For the record,I have seen a couple of eps of the Dresden series on Sci-Fi,although I can't really say yet how much it deviates from what was established in the novels.)Anyway, considering that Roc has gotten up to nearly a dozen Garret novels w/half of the earlier novels OOP this was long overdue. The other Glen Cook novel is "Passage At Arms" which is military SF. Yes, Glen Cook has written the occasional SF novel, for those of you familiar only w/his fantasy work. In fact it's set in the same universe as a trilogy of books called Starfishers, taking place sometime before events in those books, but written long after them. Mabye if this sells well Night Shade Books(which printed this edition)will go and print the other ones as well.On a personal note, I had a difficult time getting this one. I ordered it from Amazon and it took forever. You have to understand...I ordered it through standard shipping. Considering the last time I did that you would think I would know better...I was lucky to even get that particular package. What really made it worse was that I ordered TWO books...and they shipped both seprately. The first came through, but the Glen Cook one didn't. Eventulally, it got to the point that I complained so loudly that they wound up sending another copy via UPS, which thankfully got here. I'm probaly going to make any further orders(at least for now) from Barnes and Noble.(They always ship w/UPS,regarless of how quickly I want the order to come.)Anyway, sorry for that tangent, but this was something I had to get off my chest. Definitely keep you're eyes out for these two.

UPDATE: the second and third Garrett novels, "Bitter Gold Hearts" & "Cold Copper Tears", respectively, are back in print. BTW, any plans to review any of the Garrett books? Or, for that matter any of Cook's other novels? |

Eventually, yeah. I might start with The Instrumentalities of Night, since it's the latest series. |

UPDATE: Night Shade Books is going to reprint Glen Cook's "The Dragon Never Sleeps" which, despite its title, is a space opera. You can find out more about it here... http://www.nightshadebooks.com/book.aspx?bookid=180 |

Glen Cook's Black Company novels are really enjoyable. I liked them a lot way back in the day. I haven't gotten around to reading any of his other stuff, but I have heard good things about that Dragon Never Sleeps book. I was also eyeing that Dread Empire omnibus that recently hit the bookshelves. It's good to see this author getting books back in print! That was the biggest thing holding me back from checking out some of his other books. |

A new omnibus from Tor comprising the first three Black Company books has just turned up in my mailbox. I think there's a conspiracy to get me started on Glen Cook or something! |
