Sequel to Spin

I was going to post this in the thread I had originally made about Spin, but it appears to have disappeared.

That post essentially explained that while I thought Spin was a great novel, I felt there were a few flaws in it and that it didn't quite deserve the perfect score it got here. One of the problems I had with the book was that the author seemed to deliberately leave the end of the book wide open for a sequel - a custom which many authors follow and which frankly drives me nuts.

Your response to this assertion was that you hadn't felt that the author had deliberately done this, and that it wasn't likely that he was planning a sequel. However, I just recently found out about the new novel Axis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_(novel) - which is slated for publication this year and which is a sequel to Spin.

All of that being said, I am still going to buy Axis as well as the third book - Spin was quite good, and I imagine Axis and its sequel will be as well. However, I still resent Spin being deliberately left open for a sequel, and wonder what your thoughts are on the publication of Axis.

Re: Sequel to Spin

My thoughts? Well, that I'm looking forward to Axis, what else? Anyway, my view was that — whether you take the view Wilson had deliberately left Spin open for a sequel or not — Spin ended on its own just fine. I didn't get the feeling a sequel was needed, and Wilson has never done sequels in the past. So I didn't feel the book ended the way it did solely to set up a sequel; it could have gone either way, but I was satisfied with the ending whether a sequel were to be written or not.

Anyway, I guess I don't grok your continued frustration. You were right that a sequel was forthcoming. So why continue to be annoyed with Spin for setting one up? I'd think one would be more frustrated at a book that set up a sequel and then never delivered. Ah, that's just me.

If you're going to be driven nuts by SF and fantasy books that leave openings for sequels at the end, I can only imagine you're driven nuts by 95% of what's on the racks right now. Series fiction is the rule these days. Stand-alone novels are not only rare but actively discouraged by editors. I'd like to see more stand-alone work, but the marketplace has spoken.
