Of surprises and questions
As I'm sure many visitors to this site have learned by now, J.K. Rowling surpised everyone when she "outed" Dumbledore a few days ago. Which of course has given the right-wingocracy as well as the Christian Fundamentalsts another reason to hate the "Harry Potter" books. So, I'm posting this question: has there been a book you've read or liked that certain groups have tried to get banned from the local library or bookstore for whatever reason? It dosen't necessarily have to be SF or fantasy...but in the context of this site, I'm sure there must have been at on time or another. |

I wonder whether book banning (in modern times) is more of a North American thing. I cannot remember hearing of any book being banned by a UK library, yet we often receive news reports of such incidents in the US. I don't mean to paint the UK as some sort of artistic utopia: we save our self-righteous anger for the stage and screen - just look at the Jerry Springer: the Opera saga and see what the writers Stewart Lee and Richard Thomas had to go through. Of course, people are always calling for books to be banned (remember The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie) over here but it never actually happens. What books were banned in your part of the world, Joel? |

Richard, as far as I know, I am unaware of any attemtps to ban books (outside of Harry Potter, of course) altough I believe someone keeps a list of what books are "challenged"...that is, trying to ban them for any length of time: www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bannedbooksweek.htm |
