Ensign Flandry
Hi, Does anyone know which are the first, second and third books of the Poul Anderson series "Ensign Flandry"? Thanks |

When Ace did them, they released the novel Ensign Flandry first, followed by the collections Flandry of Terra and Agent of the Terran Empire. When iBooks reissued them a few years ago (before they closed up shop following publisher Byron Preiss's untimely death), they repeated that sequence, and you can probably still find those editions around. But the next actual Flandry novels after Ensign Flandry are A Circus of Hells, The Rebel Worlds and The Knight of Ghosts and Shadows, none of which are in print now, so you'll have to scour used bookstores. |

Hi Thomas, Thanks for getting back to me. Now I'm *really* confused. I thought there were only 3 in the series: Agent of the Terran Empire; Ensign Flandry; and Flandry of Terra. As I couldn't go by the publication dates at the library because the book "Ensign Flandry" has 'other books by Poul Anderson: Agent of the Terran Empire and Flandry of Terra' listed on the inside pages and they show later and earlier dates on the libraries websites. So, is the 1st "Agent of the Terran Empire", the 2nd "Flandry of Terra" and the 3rd "Ensign Flandry" (in order of *original publication dates*)? Thanks, again, Thomas. |

Oh yeah, it's confusing all right, especially as the Ace labeling of Books 1, 2, and 3 are in exactly the opposite order of publication dates! Here's the best I can come up with, in terms of publishing chronology: 1. AGENT OF THE TERRAN EMPIRE 2. FLANDRY OF TERRA 3. ENSIGN FLANDRY 4. REBEL WORLDS 5. A CIRCUS OF HELLS (I was wrong about this one being the second novel; looks like it was the third) 6. A KNIGHT OF GHOSTS AND SHADOWS 7. A STONE IN HEAVEN 8. THE GAME OF EMPIRE Fantastic Fiction's page on Anderson has these books in this order, but their listings under the series heading "Flandry" can be misleading because they actually include a number of stories that don't star Flandry at all, but just happen to be set in the same universe. |
