Times Eye ... Clarke and Baxter
I found this book a very enjoyable read which could have been complimented by a basic understanding of a little history... the concept was great though as others have pointed out it did have a 2001 feel to it.. the concept of an intelligence immeasurably greater than ours out there with objectives that we can only guess apon but that will no doubt be made tantalisingly clear in later novels in the series. The author(s) chose the correct number of characters to develop and balanced them well... the plot did slow for a while building to the Mongols vs Macedonian climax at Babylon, though the main mystery of the novel, the hovering and impenetrable spheres where pi is exactly 3.0 remain as elusive as ever until right at the end when all of a sudden the main character is able to communicte with one of them and have it grant her ultimate wish... a return home.. this part I found a little too "dues ex machina" and perhaps a little too contrived and out of balance with the majority of the plot. |
