I did not take any pictures during my first tour in Nam. These were all given to me by the guys in my platoons - which is why I am in all of them. Unfortunately, a couple of them have water damage.
I call this one "A boy and his tommy gun".
Remember how in the opening of the movie "We were Soliders Once, And Young" the French officer was bitching about all of the grass - but in the movie you only saw a couple of bunches of grass. This is the grass that the Frechie was talking about.
Just coming back inside the wire after a long patrol.
11 Bravo will recognize this place.
Me and two of my guys - Jay on the left and Frank on the right.
Me back when I was just a baby Ranger at Ft. Benning and John Wayne was our CO.
Re: God jack .. in that last pic of the ranger Class you look all of 12 years old
Yeah, I was just a few weeks past my 20th birthday when that picture was taken. And the funny part is that by the time of that picture, I was already teaching troops how to kill folks - I was an instructor in the Ranger Dept of the Infantry School, teaching patrolling and ambush.
I loved working with those guys. I made some really good friends there and lost several of them in Viet Nam.
Jay WAS a badass - and a damn fine troop. He was one of my squad leaders. He also has the distinction of being one of two men in my platoon to suffer minor shrapnel wounds from his own hand grenade because the shi*t was happening a little too close in. I was the other one.
