AEC engine fuel filter

The AEC engine has a fuel filter which involves carefully bunching up and wrapping a square piece of linen cloth around a wire cage and then tying it at the top with linen thread. Whilst this is a quaint and rather charming task I wondered if anyone knew if there was a modern cartridge-type fuel filter that could be substituted next time my fuel filter is changed.

My bus number (if any): RM 238, RM 471 & RM 2213

Re: AEC engine fuel filter

Yes Chris some of the CAV filters even the double cylinder type can be substituted for the old style LT one. As we have only changed ones on RTs I cannot give you a model or type, but the trick is getting a filter unit that will attach to the old filter's fittings.

My bus number (if any): RTL 960, RML 2667, RM 1585, RMC 1458 and 14 RTs

Re: AEC engine fuel filter

I think the conversion kit is obselete - I am fairly sure that the filter is CAV 7111-44 (also obselete) and you need a spacer, bottom washer and spring

PS 1414 retains it cloth filter which we change - as you say 'quaint'

Re: AEC engine fuel filter

BEA1 has two extra fuel filters fitted underneath, http://rob-duker.fotopic.net/p58933019.html

It also has twin fuel tanks fitted to the off side, I was told the extra tank was called a night tank?? http://rob-duker.fotopic.net/p58933101.html

It also retains its paraffin tank on the nearside, which is for the Wabasto saloon heater. http://rob-duker.fotopic.net/p58933102.html

I have a spare 11.3 AEC engine that has twin Crosland fuel filters. http://rob-duker.fotopic.net/p58933787.html

There should be no problem if anyone wants to fit an aditional fuel filter

Re: AEC engine fuel filter

Hi Rob

Your twin filter arrangement underneath must be an afterfit, assume it has suffered crap in the tank a long time ago, the filter on the right which is(should be) the first in the fuel line from the tank is not actually a filter per se, it is a sediment trap and just has a trumpet end in it, the actual primary fuel filter ( on the left in the picture) is a standard chassis fitment to Guys and Daimlers with Gardner engines as the fuel filter on the engine is a much smaller 'tit' thing.

That is a similar set up to that we have on a couple of RTs where the previous owners couldn't get the mesh or bowl and changed the lot. Isn't that L/H one underneath on the BEA an RT one Rob?
