EP Valve reconditioning Urgent

We have a problem with a SCG gearbox on RML 2667 (Cummins engine), it will not go into 2nd and we are pretty sure that there is an airleak. We know the EPV has been played about with and may well be faulty and causing the problem. Anyone any suggestions and/or know where we can get it reconditioned and/or tested, service exchanged etc UK or French suppliers welcome!!

My bus number (if any): RMC 1485 and RTL 960 plus loads of RTs

Re: EP Valve reconditioning Urgent

I tried Imperial Engineering, no good, but they suggested PSV partsmaster of Rochester, they need a serial number which we are getting. Anyone else used them or have another supplier. The S Devon RM 1872 site was very useful, seems they had a similar problem.
Does anyone know if there are other EP valves than the CAV 276 A2 type on the RMs?

Re: EP Valve reconditioning Urgent

Hi. It might be worth trying Ray Trigg. A couple of years ago he was selling ex-WD EP valve units identical with the Routemaster. They were obviously fitted to some military vehicle though I don't know which one. Anyway, they were brand new with a full set of EP valves and electrical gear. Give him a bell on 01782 513284. He may just have some still in stock - they were reasonably priced.

Re: EP Valve reconditioning Urgent

I don't know if their range of air stuff extends to EP units (don't see why not) try Fleetparts, Warrington - they have a depot/branch in Crawley which is a bit nearer you Brian (by about 250 miles!!)

Hi Mike thanks for the reply, Unfortunately Ray doesn't remember having these but more importantly for future reference hasn't got any mechanical parts now only lights and mirrors etc.He sold everything on to Deansfield Commercials.

Thanks Mark, will follow up Fleet Parts, the other lot in Rochester are seeing if they can get one for us, no idea of price yet though.

Brian

It might be worthwhile checking the Railcar Association, as many DMU's had AEC engines with SCG gearboxes with EP Valves. This website may provide some contact numbers; www.railcar.co.uk

Re: EP Valve reconditioning Urgent

hi brian. if you havn't sorted the ep valve out..would you be interested in a second hand one?

My bus number (if any): rm 997

Re: EP Valve reconditioning Urgent

I would have been Tony, but the one from our bus is on its way to Alliance at Sheffield for a refurb and test. At least we will be able to rule out the valve as a problem if the gearbox still doesn't function properly.
Thanks for the offer, we might be interested in it for a spar for the other RMs or maybe someone else could use it. What sort of price are you looking for? You can E mail me if you wish.

Re: EP Valve reconditioning Urgent

In relation to a possible air leak....I understood from the Queensbridge fitter that in the case of a piston air leak that if the top cover of the box was removed, air could be seen bubbling up through the oil, and could be heard also. This due to a faulty rubber seal on the relevent piston. If this was the case obviously the top end of the piston assembly would not be activating the gear change but would visibly lie dormant. Also the suspect piston can be proved by connecting up 60psi of air pressure to the relevant connector below the alleged faulty seal.I would welcome any comments on this! Ian.
