Fuel Pump settings and tracking

In order to get more information on fuel pump settings its necessary to say what type of pump is used. The FP 77 DPA pumps first introduced on the last RMLs and later rolled out to other RMs have different set ups to the original and more common FP 73 pumps.

There is an on-line manual for DPA pumps which if I'm reading it right suggests no adjustment is necessary, it can be read here.

or here http://www.scribd.com/doc/48413231/Lucas-CAV-DPA-Injection-Pump-Instruction-Book

Tracking was certainly done at overhaul and changes of axles at agarages(boats on RMs) by LT, but wheels were not balanced.

Re: Fuel Pump settings and tracking

DPA pumps, whilst better in a lot of ways to the in-line pumps, are not really suitable for today's low sulphur diesel unless they have been modified.

I learnt this soon after the introduction of LS diesel which contains little or no lubricant. The cam ring in the pump wears out very quickly and cause stalling and other problems. I had a Reliance with a 760, and during its last couple of years service, we had to change the pump 3 or 4 times. It was during that period that the cause and solution was found.

I've got a lot of Lucas/CAV technical fuel pump books which I haven't had time to look through yet, most seem to be service bulletins.

The current mix of bio and normal diesel has to some way reversed the problem as bio is a far better lubricant but then can encourage fuel bug as someone else pointed out. Having said that, I ran RML2532(Cummins engine) on neat bio for 2 years with no noticable problems.

As for tracking, very important depending how quickly you want to wear out your tyres. On RMs, the condition of the shock absorbers is also important when it comes to tyre wear.

Fuel Pump settings

Thanks Roys.

The fuel injector pump is an in-line CAV. I have an ex MOD one in mint condition and wanted to check it was set up for an RM before installing it. It is triple wrapped in thick polythene with oil between the layers. I'll get it out and read the setup information which is on a label inside the packaging when I get home.

I have an excellent diesel injection specialist familiar with old fuel pumps who is equipped to set them up accurately and is able to find parts for them. He just hasn't got the RM setup information in any of his ancient manuals. However I've no problems with the performance of the Mammoth Major settings which he used.

Weren't the AV590s de-rated, presumably by adjusting the fuel pump & governor?

Re: Fuel Pump settings

Hello Chris,

I suggest you take this mothballed pump in to your fuel injection specialist and tell him it has been long term stored. Calibrating oil dries out over time and can gum up the internals, the last thing you want is the engine running away because the rack has stuck on max delivery. Being ex military it may have been filled with preserving oil; or it may not have been.

Re: Fuel Pump settings

Being ex-military, it probably has a life expectancy of about a week in service, the probability it will be blown up by the enemy in that time!!

On a serious note, the governor will need resetting as the pump will be set for a manual gearbox, not a semi-auto.

Try Ian Watson at Watson Diesels, Wimbledon or Steve at J&S Rainham (Essex). I'm certain they've got the spec for them.

Re: Fuel Pump settings

I thought J&S folded last year.

Re: Fuel Pump settings

Two companies, J&S Diesel split a few years back and are still alive and well. they've just done a pump for RFW14.
