Gear control panel mod on Scania RM

The famous EF Language School bus is currently broekn somewhere in Italy having lost 3rd gear. Speaking with the driver, it doesn't appear to be air or gearbox leated. He sent me some pix of the gear control panel, and there's been some mods done that I've not come across yet.

The connections to the control panel have been replaced by a new tag block to the left of the "tree", and feature what appears to be a SCART connector with wires going into the controil panel.

Is this a one-off mod or were all the Scania RMs like it?

Anyway, I've sent him details of how to by-pass the auto box with some bits of wire which should get him going again!
