Frame fractures

Does this drawing show areas on the frames where cracks might be likely to occur or where cracks had actually been found at the point where the drawing was made in 1963? If it`s the latter, that`s a surprising amount so early in the life of RM`s.

Re: Frame fractures

There were quite a few teething problems with the early RMs. Neil. A major programme of A frame and front boat modifications took place on first overhaul at Aldenham on a large number of the early production buses. May also have included the B Frames. Perhaps this drawing was part of the work done to identify the problem areas?

A special team was set up, amongst them Lionel Moss to do the work on the RM frames.

Then there was the steering column failures on the RMs at Poplar and West Ham. The body didn't fracture much as such, it just shook loose all the floor securing rivets and wore away in the gangway between the 4-seats.

The RMLs are probably he least likely to suffer from B frame problems as I believe most if not all of the B Frames were changed during the refurb programme,

My bus number (if any): RTL 960, RMC 1458 RM 1585 and several RTs

Re: Frame fractures

From the top picture where the rubbers mount normally from the front is normally where they crack. At bn we suffered more from rml failures than we did rm. They didn't seem to suffer any other failures on the frame. I do think a lot of failures are down to weight and pot hole conditions.

My bus number (if any): 1083
