London Transport vinyl

Hello,
Our bus has just been resprayed. I would like to add the London Transport vinyl along the sides but not sure of the correct height/length of lettering. Also want to restore the bus number on the bonnet and door side panel (I asked the painter to keep the originals so I had a reference, but he didn't).
Can anybody assist with details, please?

My bus number (if any): RML 2672

Re: London Transport vinyl

Get in touch with Simon Austin at Squirrel Preservation he can help you with all the vinyls you need.

Look through old posts or use the search function for his details on this site.

My bus number (if any): RLH62

Re: London Transport vinyl

There is also a link on the ROOF site which shows the position of transfers. http://www.rmoof.co.uk/Vinyls.htm

Please note though the RML and numbers should have a double space between them (RML 2672) and not RM1699 as shown on the link.

My bus number (if any): RTL 960 RMC 1458, RM 1585 and loads of RTs

Re: London Transport vinyl

Hello Alan,
I note you have a very late RML so the details are different to many Routemasters of earlier batches.

Of course it's your bus and you can do what you like but if you are keen to present it as it looked originally here are a few pointers to hopefully help you.

For 1967/68 spec:

It had a flake grey band, not cream. White came in the mid 1970's.

Gold lettering for fleet numbers Original 1961 LT font. Fine black border, the '1' has a chamfer, not a serif tick.

Gold underlined fleetname LONDON TRANSPORT

White legal lettering.

Black 'emergency exit' on side and upper rear window

White on black number plates.

But beware of the fonts. I noticed browsing through some pictures from RM60 that very few restored buses carry the correct fonts ( typefaces) for details like number plates.

Similarly the London Transport logo is also being produced incorrectly. This is because the original was hand designed to be proportional and cannot be replicated using computer typesetting.

I think there is a record of what's right and wrong being compiled but not sure. A good look at photographs from the right period will help immensely.
