September 4th

Many people working on LT in 1982 will remember September 4th as the schedule change date that took well over two hundred Routemasters out of the weekday service requirements - the first mass withdrawal of the type.
The sheer scale of the logistics to get all of the vehicle transfers in place to start the new schedule was such that moving withdrawn stock to storage took second place. Many garages had scenes like this one at Mortlake on Sept 4 1982 as withdrawn buses gathered in a corner awaiting removal several days distant. All of those withdrawn were in good condition and fully serviceable but fell into the criteria of having the minority engine and electrical systems - Leyland and Simms respectively.
