Layout of Chiswork Works (engineering)

I was looking through an official LT publication explaining the engineering section of Chiswick Works and the functions of the different departments. It`s dated 1961 and refers to the need to prepare for the changes that are about to occur as RM types gradually take away the RT related dominance.

The plan of the Works reveals just how many different `shops` made up the engineering side and accounted for roughly 70% of the site with the remainder being occupied by the Training School which was located to, and beyond, the bottom of the diagram. Much further beyond the lowest edge would have been the gates opening onto Chiswick High Road as the southern boundary. In all, a massive site bounded by the District and Piccadilly lines to the north and east with Acton Works on the western edge.

Re: Layout of Chiswork Works (engineering)

The map actually lumps quite a few shops under Unit Assembly shops, when in fact they were quite separate.e.g. Gearboxes and axles.

Radiators were done in the Coppersmiths and were a large part of their work.

Nothing changed very much when the RM parts started to come through in large numbers, most RM parts assimilated to existing "RT" shops.

Big imminent changes change to come were the closing of the Foundry and the Tyre Stores and the Tyre Stores conversion to a Woodmill, serving both Acton and Aldenham's needs.

My bus number (if any): RTL 960 RMC 1458, RM 1585 and loads of RTs
