A short lived style of advert

In 1984, for a year or so prior to the introduction of advert `frames`, some Routemasters carried a much longer off-side advert that also extended down the staircase panels. Never paper, these were vinyl and how fortunate was it that this new idea was to have a fairly short life on just some of the fleet. Imagine how, over time, paint could have come off or scraper gouges made in panels when the advert was removed. And unless replaced by a similar size advert, the damage would be highly visible. Luckily that scenario wasn`t put to the test as by the end of the initial contract for the large size adverts, the frames had made their debut - with all the rivet hole damage that preservationists years later would curse........

RM 1632 probably didn`t carry one of those big adverts for long as this picture is taken at The Sales Department site at the old AEC Works on 17 July 1984.
