How to attract a PG9

On looking through my most recent batch of digitalised slides I found this one of RM 1755 taken in Harlesden on Feb 4 1983.

I couldn`t believe that the bus is in service with such damage ahead of the fuel filler. Really mangled metal with protruding jagged edge bits that look much more severe when zooming in for a better look than is possible here.
I know that Cricklewood Garage wasn`t highly regarded for smart buses but surely this one wasn`t sent out to work in this condition. And it seems equally improbable that the damage had happened just prior to this picture being taken as I would have expected this to have been used as a reason or excuse to take the bus out of service.
