Layrub propshaft couplings for GS

Layrub coupling



The rubber in the prop shaft couplings in my GS has become so perished that my maintenance provider is reluctant to pass it at it's annual safety inspection (MOT not needed as pre 1960)

Twiflex http://www.twiflex.com/products/Flexible-Couplings-and-Shafts still support Layrub couplings and have been able to supply replacements.

They are identified as TLA21011 COUPLING 80+ 2/4 60/65 and they are £160.00 each. They took 10 weeks to arrive.

Price: GBP 160.00 nett each

Not unlike the Rotoflex coupling used on Triumphs and Lotus cars of the 60s and 70s.

Rotoflex couplings are now a problem as the quality is lacking in the raw materials.

On Lotus cars a new type of coupling has been designed and manufactured by a small business.

This works much better but will last indefinitely. It might be that the same set up would benefit the GS long term.

Googling Lotus couplings should lead to the manufacturer supplier.

As luck had it I had a couple of "new" ones in stock last time I rebuilt GS67 about 6 years ago. even on "new" old stock you have to watch out for the rubber perishing, it has a life of about 20 years.

The layrub couplings are the same sort of design as used on cars, but these are much heavier duty. I need a few new ones for RF fan shafts.

Comparing price, they are probably cheaper than the Hardy Spicer couplings used on Routemasters.
