Re: Handgrake Pawl

Hi Brian, certainly nowhere near that amount, but its just for the Pawl, not the 'Jawbone' ratchet part
It will probably depend on how many we have manufactured but I'll keep posting as I progress through the process, and as soon as I get a price, I'll post it ASAP

My bus number (if any): RML 2353, MB 306

Re: Handgrake Pawl

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that Imperial Engineering has them available or is able to refurbish old stock.

Try contacting them before you have some made. Yes, they are expensive.

Re: Handgrake Pawl

Thanks Andrew, the price we are looking at is around 85 to 90 pounds including postage

Re: Handgrake Pawl

That sounds like a bargain. Is this for a new or reconditioned unit ?

I seem to remember a price of around £300.

Re: Handgrake Pawl

Hi Andrew, they are new but only for the Pawl, not the ratchet "jaw bone" part. The minimum order is 20 pieces

Thanks for the update.

Sounds like we need to do some more investigations.

Being blunt it’s a total waste of time just changing the pawl as the ratchet always wears to.

It’s important that the pawl and ratchet are matched and the correct taper profile,
You cannot make a pawl to match the profile of worn ratchet.

We probably replace 3 to 6 sets most years with all the Routemasters maintain and MOT etc.

Imperial engineering do supply service exchange matched sets.

Here`s a picture from Roy that he will add the explanation to......

Re: Handgrake Pawl

Thank you Neil for your help with uploading the picture.

A picture is better than a thousand words. This clearly shows how important it is for the teeth of the pawl and the quadrant to mesh correctly. Believe it or not this is a handbrake assembly as returned to me a few years ago, FOLLOWING 'overhaul', by a company who should have known better. They argued that it was OK.
