Routemaster Diffs

Craig at Queensbridge has borrowed a spare Routemaster Crown Wheel and Pinion that I have, it’s a DU18, that’s a higher ratio set, as fitted to RMC and RCL buses.

This is the ratio that I have fitted in RM1797, combined with the Scania engine it cruises at a comfortable 45 mph. It would go faster if I pushed it, but I don’t.

The idea is to get estimates and ultimately get a batch made.
When and if a price is arrived at, Queensbridge will be able to offer them to anyone who is interested.

Re: Routemaster Diffs

Rob - please do keep me posted on developments - I'd certainly be interested in a higher spped diff.

As a matter of interest, could anyone advise what modifications need to be made to the speedometer equipment if when a higher speed diff is fitted to make sure that you get the correct reading?

My bus number (if any): RM1699 - Eastbourne Regent V 69

Re: Routemaster Diffs

At this juncture, It might be worth mentioning half shafts as well as the two components work hand in hand and any wear leads to more problems long term.

We have just had a new set of half shafts made for some of our trucks which have been dogged by rapid wear and failures.

Our engineering manager commissioned a firm that makes upgraded quality parts for motorsport and found that they made high grade half shafts for MGBs (which are almost the same design as the RM only smaller obviously.

The new shafts are EN40B Nitrided Steel and are virtually unbreakable.

Re: Routemaster Diffs

Jack,
If you forward me the contact details of the company that makes halfshafts I will gladly follow it up and see if they are interested in making a batch of RM halfshafts for us, and at what price, which is the important thing.

Re: Routemaster Diffs

I'll do it on Monday, They won't be cheap, but as ordinary ones would require the same commissioning/set up costs, The actual difference will probably just the difference in steel cost and the process.

Re: Routemaster Diffs & Motorway Speeds

45MPH is to slow for motorway use I drive a truck for a living & I think slow traffic should be Banned off the motorway as its dangerous.
I was on the M4 last week (Newport south Wales) going up hill doing 56MPH & was overtaken by a Routemaster .
The Routemaster was, D reg RML & it sounded very nice as it overtook me cant they all do that speed?

Re: Routemaster Diffs

Hi One of my friends has spoken to a chap called Dean Smith at Moss Europe.
Naturally, they want to keep their specialist suppliers under wraps but they have offered to pass the specs on to them and ask if production of an upgraded half shaft is possible.
Presumably, the RMOOA or someone has the engineering specs for these parts.?
