SUGGESTIONS & GUIDELINES FOR USE IN DISCUSSION FORUM

If you want to upload an album or songs to this section of the site, please ensure that it's not already on a physically available CD or one that's slated for future release on CD. By that we mean the actual Disc with artwork and packaging which you can physically hold in your hands.

To check on that availability, most often but not always on independent labels, the best sources  are reputable music traders like JB Hi Fi, Sydney's Red Eye Records & Timewarp's mail order division and for major label releases only, Sanity. Also check an artist's or a record label's online website ie Aztec Music, Raven or Canetoad Records. If you're still unsure then please ASK as someone is sure to know.

The minimum bitrate to upload at is 256kbps but must be 320 if ripping the music yourself.  Lower bit rates may only be accepted if there truly is no other option ie you are a 2nd or 3rd party . Many would disagree, but it's sometimes better to have something of extreme rarity in poor quality than not at all. But again ask if someone has a better rip before uploading your inferior one.

Artwork is highly desired but not a pre-requisite when uploading as someone in the group may be able to provide it later if you can't e.g. you have no scanner. However in all cases when posting an album in the discussion forum, please let us know if the CD art is included or not. If it is then is it

(a) the full artwork CD ready ie front & back cover scans, any gatefold inserts and tray insert. For best results we recommend scanning all 4 corners of L.P. covers before stitching so all information on the cover is available.
(b) just front & back only with no tray insert
(c) or just front cover scan only. The latter is to be discouraged completely unless you intend providing the back scan later. In which case wait till then & upload both.

ALWAYS: If providing art, please also list it as A SEPARATE LINK even if it is included with the main music file. This is so that others who only need the art don't have to download 80-100 mg of music they already own to get it.

Lastly, we appreciate that some here do have difficulty in stitching the scans together, so it is initially acceptable to upload unstitched scans. Someone may help & do the job for you, uploading these at a later stage. However it is strongly suggested that you keep practicing your own skills .

GO-SET MAGS

Hi All, has anyone got any copies of GO-SET mag? I need some info from inside some issues for a book. Cheers

Re: GO-SET MAGS

Hi,
High Voltage,

I have a few dozen from memory, up in my attic. I have a lot more of Juke and RAM and Rolling Stone though.

If you are interested I shall find the time to have a look.

Cheers

Re: GO-SET MAGS

That would great if you could have a look for them.. thanks so much.

Re: GO-SET MAGS

If you are from Melbourne, the State Library of Victoria has the complete collection stored on microfiche reels.Articles / pages can be scanned onto your memory stick through a computer system at the Library for around 10 cents a page. Staff are really helpful. It's hard work trolling through the reels on the microfiche but worth the effort if it helps with your research.I was able to find a rare photo of The Kinetics when I searched these Go-Set files last year.

Re: GO-SET MAGS

Thanks DaveL.. I got them sent over last year and scanned what I need from them. although some articles I wanted were unreadable due to bad microfish scans.. Glad they had them all though.. still looking for better original copies.

Re: GO-SET MAGS

Thank to all that sent me a private message willing to help with articles from GoSet. That will help with my book project..

Re: GO-SET MAGS

A long shot, hoping someone might have an original copy of Go-Set magazine January 4th 1967 edition. I'm looking for a scan from page 12, of a photo of The Kinetics on stage. The microfiche file at the state library has a distorted image of the bass player, I'm trying to ID 100% that the bass player is John Vallins ,not Ken Leroy as described in various rock books and internet sites, ( eg Encyclopedia of Australian Rock, Starclustermmusic site)
Would greatly appreciate any help given.
Cheers

Re: GO-SET MAGS

DaveL

i think you might be out of luck , it looks to me like the bass player is either hidden behind a pillar but more likely to me there is a printing error.

anyway check this scan, click for larger image

Re: GO-SET MAGS

That is some weird photo, with parts of the bass player missing, but with the backdrop still there? See the bass guitar neck.

I also found this article which you have no doubt seen. http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/rarecollections/john-vallins/5282140

Re: GO-SET MAGS

Many thanks Woodynet and mcphert1, appreciate the instant responses and the extra material supplied. On the John Vallins podcast ( mcphert1 ), John does state that he played the bass , so the headless photo must be Vallins. Much appreciated.

Re: GO-SET MAGS

I'm writing a biography on BAKERY and was given a photo of The Kinetics which included future Bakery keyboardist Paul Ewing. The Bass player is holding the same Beatle bass.. the photo is from 67 and looks to be Vallins.. will call Paul to confirm later today.

Re: GO-SET MAGS

High Voltage

Any chance you would be able to share the photo ???? or email it ???

Re: GO-SET MAGS

Just spoke with Paul and the line up in the pic he gave me is John Vallins, Ken Leroy, Ian Manzie and Paul Ewing. I don't think it documented that Paul was in the band near the end. I have documented it my forthcoming book though.

will post the pic soon.. It's a bad scan from Paul and I have to re do it when I see him again.. he didn't fold the plastic back haha

Re: GO-SET MAGS

Thanks for the photo, really historical in context, certainly answers my initial query and opens up new questions, great. Looking forward to your new book, I have the John Hood book and found it to be an excellent insight into the man and his unique music, highly recommended.
