Immigrant assistance has also become a business. Just Google "Catholic Charities Immigration Assistance". Some of the petition drives are funded by organizations that rely on federal and state subsidies for immigrant assistance - documented or undocumented. Citizen safety is not a priority.
Excellent point made- hadn't thought about this previously - although not sure if that pertains to all those small local churches who claim to offer protection to illegal immigrants.
It is shame how the main street press and the Democratic party have demagogue the issue. Every newscast or newspaper lump all immigrants in the same bowl whereas they are different groups - illegal, legal, and criminal immigrants and that Trump is only going after the 850,000 criminals - but the press and Democrats don't want to identify these separate groups because it doesn't fit their narrative - that Republicans and supporters are bigots and against immigration. I can't find a Republican or Trump supporter who is against legal immigration! The Democrats seem to support illegal immigration and especially criminal immigrants - which is mind boggling!
If the quoted article does not fit one's agenda, apparently the new rule is that it can simply be called "fake news".
Hey Bruce - seems like you are someone who can't tell fake news from real news - here is an example of fake news as a teaching moment for you. now listen up and pay attention!
When the main street press called Trumps initial temporary 90 days halt of refugees and immigrants from the 7 countries until more stringent vetting can be implemented, and and which have failed governments and also been identified by the Obama administration as having terrorist training camps and encourage violence to both Muslims and the West - and the main street press calls this a Muslim band when it doesn't include 80% of Muslims living in the Middle East. That's an example of fake news.
Now with that example, Bruce, you should be able to detect fake news when you see or read it. But if you still have a problem differentiating fake news from real news - just come back and tell us and we will guide you through the evaluation. You need to remember that most Democrats will be challenged by fake news - since they were brought up with it!
It's SO easy to get your "balls in an uproar"! You just read right by the "if" (there was no claim that the referenced story was fake) and "ones" (no claim about my beliefs) and went on the offense immediately. Again I say, "the best defense is a good offense" tactic is not working!
I would like to see a true cost estimate of what it would do to the city if we were to become a sanctuary city. I teach in a school district that recently took in a refugee family (one of the families in town is sponsoring the family). The children are psychologically needy, medically needy (multiple handicaps), and haven't been in school in a number of years. It is a heart-breaking situation, and it is very easy to feel compassion for this terrible situation. That being said, the cost to the school system is turning out to be astronomical. We have had to hire several new staff, provide services in all areas for all of the children, reconfigure classrooms to accommodate the disability, provide translators and interpreters for the family. This is one family. Try to imagine the cost if this was large scale. Simply not feasible. Would someone like to call me heartless now?
“Why We Hate You & Why We Fight You”
by Yahya al-Bahrumi
(Former American, John Georgelas, now a leader within ISIS)
Quoted in The Atlantic March 2017)
“The fact is, even if you were to stop bombing us, imprisoning us, torturing us, vilifying us, and usurping our lands, we would continue to hate you because our primary reason for hating you will not cease to exist until you embrace Islam.
“What’s equally if not more important to understand is that we fight you, not simply to punish and deter you, but to bring you true freedom in this life and salvation in the Hereafter, freedom from being enslaved to your whims and desires as well as those of your clergy and legislatures, and salvation by worshipping your Creator alone and following His messenger.”
The BOA did the right thing last evening and voted to "file the order" which essentially gets rid of it! It was a more polite way of voting against it - although I would have preferred that they voted directly against it.
I thought that the majority of speakers both pro and con were very articulate and civil during the public input - which is typical of the Melrose that I know having lived here for over 40 years. After listening to Mayor Dolan and Police Chief Lyle - and explaining our current practices concerning illegal immigrants - it became crystal clear that this petition was a solution searching for a problem - only there was no problem for it to solve in Melrose! It became clear that not one thing would change in the way Melrose treats illegal immigrants if this petition was enacted. This is proof enough that this petition has no merit.
Some people spoke about the need for people to know that we are a welcoming community but this welcoming nature already has been established in the fabric of our community by the many different groups advocating for rights of all! Just go on the city web site and look at all the civic and non-profit groups who make up the life of our city - the diversity is incredible. Some people complained that Melrose is too white - but what has this got to do with the petition.
The BOA even acknowledged that the term "Sanctuary City" has many connotations throughout the country and not all of it good. It is a known fact that criminal illegal immigrants use a city's designation as a way to avoid lawful prosecution.....you only need to be reminded about the Kate Steinle case to understand the negative impact such a designation can have on its lawful citizens - and such an occurrences happpen too frequently across our nation.
The BOA did the right thing by tabling the petition - congrats to them! We don't need a divisive petition to show people how welcoming the city is to anyone who wants to work, live, and be a part of our community life.
I also viewed the meeting at the Board of Aldermen last evening and thought that everyone seem to be civil to each other. There was one Muslin woman who spoke at the beginning of the meeting and noted that some of her neighbors were not that welcoming to she and her family and that some of the kids in the neighborhood asked if they had guns and if they were terrorists. This type of behavior by kids is unacceptable and should never be condoned. Hopefully, this is not a normal happening with them. But the petition will not change people's attitudes, prejudices, bigotry or biases - no petition or law can do that - it takes an involved community to make these changes - which I believe exists here in Melrose.
Also, there will always be some people that cannot move themselves beyond their prejudices and bigotry - but this should not condemn a whole community - human nature given what it is. America is a true melting pot of all type of peoples - and more so than any other country in the world! We have nothing to apologize for having a history of being a welcoming nation!
Well I attended the meeting last night and lots of Melrosians came to voice their opinion, the overall majority were against becoming labeled a sanctuary city. However I was more interested that no illegal aliens showed up to voice their pleasure with this petition. I would think that they would want to let us know how great this would be for them, but nobody showed up. The truth is, we don't have many if any that live in Melrose. Perhaps some folks in our community need to realize that we don't have the demographics of other cities that have adopted that label, as much as it may disappoint them.
This was just a social exercise to prove what good liberals we are. It failed. Guess what, this is how you get Trump!
There were certainly many people who spoke in favor of the petition.[/quote]
Well there were about 250 speakers, if I had to guess the ratio was 70% against.
Anyone really interested in the illegal aliens situation needs to get out of living in their bubble and go to Google and the Centers for Immigration Studies for the total picture. Unfortunately, organizations like the U. S. Chamber of Commerce is always lobbying to help maintain the supply of illegal aliens for business that rely on them claiming U. S. citizens who want the jobs are hard to fine
I was impressed by Mr. Hori from W Highland Avenue, a first generation citizen who immigrated to this country as a child. Why does it not surprise me that a legal immigrant, who went through the process, followed all the laws, and fulfilled his dream of becoming a citizen should be the one who most clearly understands the real issue here? It's supposed to be difficult to become a citizen. It's supposed to based on a process of laws. There are requirements that must be complied with. The prior speaker also hit the nail on the head - they're illegal. They are breaking our laws. Is that what we want, or do we want people like Mr. Hori, who see citizenship as an aspiration rather than those merely seeking a meal ticket?
How is it possible for an attorney, sworn to uphold the law as part of her oath, act as a petition organizer to prevent local law officers from cooperating in the arrest of illegal immigrants under federal law ?
Apparently "Crier" is comfortable with the Liar-in-Chief and his cabal of incompetent, fascist, lying lawyers. Kellyanne is a lawyer. Maybe "Crier" is worried about his microwave, too!
Slavery was legal, as were and are many other heinous "American" things. Perhaps "Town Crier" thinks that the laws protecting slavery should have been protected, too.
Can someone let me know how if I decide I want to take my 4 year old son fishing at Ell Pond that I am subject to a fine for not having the proper documentation, yet we are willing to to make a safe harbor for someone who doesn't have proper documentation for being in this country, with no fine?
Couldn't have been happier this thing went down in flames. 223 retards tried to fix what wasn't broken. It's also scary that 223 retards could have changed the entire legal format of our city. That means 29,777 normal people would have had no say in this. Something of this magnitude should be put to a citizen vote. I was very nervous those moonbats were going to pass this.
The best part is, you know the city was filled with liberal tears that night. Makes me smile just thinking about it : )
I don't disagree that the effort was foolish, but your post is offensive.
The Trump bullies here are now reveling in calling those signing the Sanctuary petition "retards," just like their disgusting Nazi leader (with actual Nazis in his cabinet) who is hell bent for the toilet (and maybe a jail cell) based on all the laws he's already broken. Just as Trump reveled in mocking a disabled person, these disgusting excuses for humans here think it's okay to mock those with mental disabilities. Yeah, we get it that he so-called "won," if you forget all the millions who never voted and the fact that he lost the popular vote, oh and that little problem he has with his best bud Putin, that most likely will land a bunch in jail for treason. Great guy to line up with. Shows what eminent excellent judgment these bullies have, and how they are going to Make America Russian. Wonder how many more of Vlad's and Donnie's boys are going to be thrown off buildings or poisoned in the next few weeks (it's already two just on Tuesday!). Putin and Bannon indeed "won" something, all right!
Nixon won, too (but with actual votes, not electoral fakery), but he still ended up impeached. He was a crook and yet he looks like a decent, law-abiding citizen next to Trump et al. You types are so limited that you cannot understand that even those of us who did not support HRC are horrified at what DT is doing to our country and world. Keep saying he so-called "won." That is meaningless at this point. He is a vile, spoiled brat loser who is proving to the world that he was and is unfit to hold office. His only "successes" in business are because he was too rich to "fail," despite bankrupting most of what his filthy small hands have touched, and because he could do more crooked deals to make good on the bankrupt ones already down the drain. It's already been shown that he's doing business not only with Putin but probably with the Iranian gun and drug runners our troops have been losing lives fighting. The daily (and sometimes hourly) revelations about the enormity of corruption have lost Trump the faith and goodwill of even many of his most diehard supporters (except for the dopes in Melrose who don't read or think and prefer always to have their heads in the sand). The humiliating and devastating consequences for Republicans are already in full view for the world, and it will go downhill from here. This incompetent and hateful regime will make sure of that.
bullies? you liberals are bullies and babies grow up snowflake.throwing people off buildings?what the hell are you talking about!but now that you brought it up .we should have a day in melrose where you get to throw a liberal or snowflake off a building and see if it floats...wow what a better world it would be without you fruitcakes....move on...god bless potus 45
While you liberals keep insulting our President and your congressional reps remain obstructionists....the nation will move forward with: building the wall to protect us; reduce taxes for the middle class, reduce corporate taxes to bring back money from overseas and to jump-start a new economic growth, deport all criminal illegal immigrants who have been killing, sexually assaulting, and committing felonies (which Obama would not do), electing a new supreme court justice who will put the law ahead of policy making, build up our military; enact new trade agreements that out America first rather than last as our former President did.
Go President Trump!
And repeal and replace Obamacare, right? How's that working out for you? What makes it even more pathetic is that it was his own party that shot him down.
Alfred E. Neuman with nuclear weapons. I feel much better now.
You people? Where did I say I was an Obamacare supporter? It's a disaster. I myself have been hurt by it. My point is that the Repubs, with their total command of the House, can't even get their act together enough to follow through on their 8 years of using it as their chief campaign issue. The fact is the plan they came up with - since they didn't have a plan to replace Obamacare before Trump was elected - is nothing but Obamacare lite, only worse. They didn't do the work, and they paid for it. And now we get to keep paying for it.
BTW, I would describe myself as a centrist conservative. Zealots, whether they be far-left or far-right, turn my stomach. When these nitwit libtards come up with things like making Melrose a sanctuary city it makes me want to vomit, but as much as it pains me to say it, I am beginning to understand why so many right-wing nutbags head off into the mountains and stockpile guns. Obama was a disgrace. Trump is a disaster.
"wah", you don't even know WHY it's offensive, do you?
Glad that Melrose didn't pass that petition - since Attorney General Sessions confirmed that he will hold back any federal grants to Police Depts if they claim sanctuary city status. Shocking to hear that both Los Angeles and New York cities said that they will continue to protect their criminal illegal immigrants! Unbelievable! They feel that these criminals add value to their cities. It's really true - liberalism is a disease!
DeAngelis and her group of illegal criminal immigrant lovers really need to get their head on straight! Americans do not agree with them! All of us law abiding citizens want to deport ALL illegal criminal immigrants - why do you people want to keep them roaming free in our cities - are you all so crazy?
Take a seat Liz[:)s]
Protecting parents of children in sanctuary cities, even if illegal and criminals, brings out the mothering and compassion instincts in women. The majority in most of the demonstrations you see are women. They are a ready-made audience for organizers like DeAngelis.
I am always amazed when the Democrats talk about Trump's temporary travel ban for certain countries. They talk about a Muslim ban - when it is not mentioned in the EO. Also, strange that they focus on Muslims since this ban also includes Christians and other religious groups within those countries - but the press will not acknowledge this since they support Democrats.
Also, when discussing sanctuary cities - the Democrats and press talk about how the Trump policy is against immigrants! They don't distinguish between legal versus illegal immigrants or between illegal versus illegal criminal immigrants. They consider no difference between criminal and non-criminal illegal immigrants! They want to protect both category of illegal immigrants! Wow - talk about delusion and lack of common sense! But this is where the Democratic party is today - protect criminal illegal immigrants!
This should confirm to everyone how corrupt and insane the Democrats and the free press is in this country!
Balderdash!!
