Word is that the MHS Math Teacher replacement for Dr. P rejected the offer. Would love to know more. Can only imagine that one interview with the hiring administrators would tell enough of a story that a good candidate would say "outa here" just based on common sense, that no GOOD candidate would want to work for such obvious charlatans. It's curious that the district only sought a "math teacher" (and not also a science teacher) when the great Dr. P taught the only decent Physics classes in addition to Calculus (both CP and AP because she knew how to teach all levels at the highest standards). It's really sad to think that present and future classes will have to be taught by teachers who likely cannot come close to the level that Dr. P achieved uniformly every year, and even more likely that substandard education will be all that's left, at least in math and science (but pervasively in every other subject area, too).
Can someone please explain why the district needs a "behavior analyst"? And about all these so-called "academic interventionists"....? Why should anyone be hiring "experts" to teach the teachers if, as Taymore and her MEC wind-up parrots proclaim, high-quality hiring is what has taken place the last few years? No one needed to "intervene" with great educators like Dr. P or Dr. K! What's the deal here? Why does no one address these obvious red flags in all the override BS, since Taymore's laundry list of "wants" supposedly addresses these district "needs" for this layer of administrative BS consultants and supposed interventionists? Looking at the lousy presentations of recent CT hires like that obviously incompetent arts woman should say it all (could someone please tell that woman to stop babbling about "scaffolding" as if it has anything to do with the arts!!)
Sounds more like the taxpayers need to do an "intervention" and make their voices loud and clear that the elected and paid officials need to take a hike!
There are major problems in the schools, but when you toss out this kind of information it really does not mean much! I did a quick search- Wakefield has 16 job openings, and Reading has 26+. For what it's worth.
WILL THE LAST TEACHER TO LEAVE PLEASE TURN OUT THE LIGHTS ?
Dr. P. HUGE loss for MHS. Sad
This list will expand as current teachers seek opportunities outside our school district - watch this list expand soon!
It's not just the number of postings. It's who is leaving, who is hired, among other things. Also, CT does not post accurately (and this is partly on purpose, especially when an override and a large bunch of bonds are being put forward, and also because she "oversees" a less-than-competent staff, to put it mildly). Everything is skewed to present things in the best light, meaning that most of the real information is omitted from anything that is public, including this job posting list.
Anyone with even loose connection to the district knows that things are very dark, with morale (that was already at unprecedented lows) non-existent now. Students don't matter at all in the current scenario, only the continued feeding of a bloated administration that barely functions at all, never mind at any kind of acceptable standard.
Yes, CT is busy getting "awards" from her various administrator organizations, and getting large increases from her adoring fans on the SC and in MEF, in between her frequent vacations and chronically leaving early or being absent at school functions (by "agreement" with the SC--not public, of course--so that she can care for her infirm hubby). She cannot be bothered with the insignificant business of running the district in any kind of competent way, let alone the tedious matter of hiring good replacements for all the devoted educators she's driven out with her contemptuous conduct (or that of her equally contemptuous and incompetent "leadership" team. And the elected officials cannot concern themselves with anything other than spinning it all as wonderful-wonderful, and woe is us we need more money.... And Melrose citizens had better wake up and start finding some decent candidates during this paper-pulling season or they have only themselves to blame for the continued downward spiral (now at warp speed). There's no amount of spin that can dress up this stinking mess for anyone with even minimal powers of discernment (not talking about those posturing flamingo twits willfully conspiring to keep the nasty pinheads in power).
There's no excuse for the loss of Dr. Peterson. She wanted to retire from MHS and loved her students there. She felt she had to leave because the teaching atmosphere was untenable, that administration was a menace. She was and is correct. The students will suffer a great loss and the city as a whole will feel this impact. This teacher impacted so many lives in profound ways over many years. This is an incalculable and inexcusable loss. It did not have to happen. We are relieved for the sake of this great educator that she is out of further harm's way, but greatly saddened for the school and the district. Everyone should be outraged over this.
(Can someone please explain why the district needs a "behavior analyst"? And about all these so-called "academic interventionists"....? )
I don't know a lot of what is going on with all the teachers leaving and the job openings, but I know that a "behavior analyst" and an "academic interventionist" are both special education positions. I think behavior analyst works with kids who have behavior problems and academic interventionist would be someone who would work with kids whose problems are more academic based, for example dyslexia.
A behavior analyst will save the district money in that students will not be sent out of district (costing 5 to 6 digit sums of money) if a proper plan can be put in place. The analyst will perform Functional Behavioral Assessments throughout the district in all levels and enact a plan for a student rather than sending them elsewhere. An academic interventionist is almost the same thing. Except with academics and not 100% behavioral. Once again, it will serve the teachers and students with extra insight as to issues a student is facing. These are necessary positions because they will help students and save the district money.
Thank You .
This superintendent and her predecessor both had full knowledge of the general incompetence of the SPED director, the burgeoning costs of the program, the way everything else in the district Except Administrative Raises, have been compromised and skewed around. Taymore was hired as a so-called SPED (and curriculum) expert (though her colleagues in Malden would take issue with that characterization). She has done a miserable job of overseeing the needs of SPED students, and all of the others by extension, since everything else, Except Administrative Raises (which are always her first priority), has had to take a low priority. SPED families are none too happy with the program, as nearly everyone would attest, and as have the few parents who have gone up in Public Participation to plead their case (though only member of the SC is ever listening).
SPED is an unqualified failure in Melrose. Giving more money for CT to do more bad hiring is just enabling an already very sick and damaged system. She has already had 3 years to turn things around, and instead of doing that, she's run anything good straight into the ground, with lawsuits right and left (not that the public will be allowed to know this), and excellent cherished faculty resigning long before they ever wanted to, even without other jobs in place.
All these "interventionists" and "facilitators" are just rehashed "co-teachers" brought in to "teach" or aid the flailing teachers already in place, many of whom CT hired (out of the lowest end of the hiring pool). Anyone who buys the lines of bull that this administration is putting out there is just shooting themselves (and their children) in the foot because everyone (especially the students) is ultimately paying and paying and paying.
The real tragedy of the HS math posting is that it means we will not be able to hire a qualified teacher....last minute summer hiring is how we got many of the worst teachers in the district. The qualified applicants have all been snatched up by other districts, which means most of the people being interviewed are those who couldn't find a job anywhere else.
Because it's summer, the new hire won't be able to be observed in a classroom teaching a class, which also puts us at a big disadvantage. The high school screwed up the hiring process by not doing this in January, maybe because they thought they could talk Dr. P. into staying. They waited to long, and now students will suffer doubly....not only the loss of the great Dr. P., whose college recommendation letters probably got more kids into their first choice schools than anyone can count, but also because they will most likely be saddled with a terrible teacher to replace her.

Watch the BOA meeting of 6/22 if you want to hear the super and business mismanager admit to burgeoning SPED costs (at around 41:00). CT: "We budget conservatively...quite honestly" (not! $48,000 for that "pot of money for superintendent to give out administrative raises" for her six-figure-earning euphemistically entitled "leadership team" is a perfect example.) 3% increase in salary costs for SPED across the board was the answer to MBMM.
https://vimeo.com/131834269
After watching the 6/25 meeting, with Mrs. Mcdrew and others rambling off the pre-scripted administrative talking points to supposedly rationalize the O, it's clear that there is a peculiar virus that has affected these otherwise supposedly intelligent individuals. How any intelligent and educated person could vote to give this very obviously incompetent and uncredible administration a dollar more than they already get can only be attributed to some sort of strange local illness.
Good for Mr. Chase (?) for his articulate statements about why the O is wrong on all counts.
What else did you expect from the MEF Mommies? It should be quite clear by now what their real agenda is, and they care quite a lot about the benefit of their "advocacy" to their own kids. They're nothing more than a poorly camouflaged special interest group, and just about everything they say should be taken with a grain of salt (being charitable) or ignored (being pragmatic).
Mr Chase's sentiments are correct, but some of his facts are wrong, ie: his statement that the town is paying police officers 130K a year. That inaccurate. A hefty percentage of that 130k is from detail work, and the city actually makes money on that, 10% of every dollar earned. He also said that police working construction jobs are being paid overtime. That's totally untrue. Overtime is only used to fill shortages on regular shifts, not road jobs. That's detail pay. Police overtime use is so high because the department does not have the people to properly cover the shifts without overtime for vacations, sick, training, military, etc., and hasn't since Dolan took office. It's Dolan's own policies that generate the overtime spike.
You are, of course, correct, but the impact would not be all that significant. Five new bodies would make a much bigger dent in the overtime, but it is actually cheaper to use overtime than to pay 5 or 6 new cops 65K a year, plus benefits. Check the ordinances - you'll see the PD is actually authorized 60 people. Dolan and Dello Russo know this full well, but they still whine about overtime use, even to the point of commissioning fake overtime "audits" and "studies". With them, it's all about taking all of the credit and none of the blame. Chief Lyle is a nice man caught in an impossible situation - if he opens his mouth he's out of a job. I'll bet even saying he didn't ask for two officers got him in hot water.
Thanks for the update on this matter....this makes the request for two more officers by the Mayor more spacious that originally thought - total dishonesty thinking that the pubic would be more amenable to voting for an override with more police officers in his request. Vote no on the override - deceit and deception is unacceptable.
There is power in numbers.
A group of citizens agreeing to run as a slate for both boards, giving each other the strength and wisdom base (since there is a steep learning curve), would begin to fix things. Melrose does not need more of the current batch of clones. It needs common sense advocates. Certainly there have to be plenty of caring and thoughtful individuals from which to choose in such a community. It's past time for them to step up. It's not enough to complain from the shadows, being afraid "to rock the boat," or any of the other lame excuses too many give here.
Similarly, citizens need to come together to say no to this freight train called the Override about to steamroll over Melrose in order to line the greedy pockets of administration and do nothing to improve anything. It can be derailed, as similar efforts by some of the same players have been in past years. But citizens have to step up and not stay asleep at the wheel. This campaign has money and might, all of which will be meaningless if citizens demand truth and accountability instead. Send this Override Overboard!
Looking at today's postings, it appears that the superintendent intends to do some of that supposed override hiring regardless of whether it passes, if that Title I Academic Interventionist posting means anything:

Wonder which "pot" Taymore found the money for some of these listings?
It's called a "structural deficit" - monies that the city gives the schools from the Mayor's slush funds!
So, we are four weeks before school starts and the high school still hasn't hired a science chair? Doesn't that concern anyone? Seeing as the science chair also teaches some classes, what are these students going to do? I'm sure all the qualified candidates are long gone, and we will end up hiring whoever is available.
Here's an idea: How about getting that "behavior analyst" to figure out why Melrose parents are so passive in allowing and enabling such a lousy administration year after year after year?!
I do not agree with the super or her cronies. I think they are poor administrators and have zero people skills. With that being said, a lot of these positions are due to teachers leaving the district thus creating a void, family (maternity) leave, and class size increases. Therefore, she would have no control over MOST of these. Not all.
Now let me see - Outsider - so you agree we have poor senior school administrators who have zero people skills, and that the super has hired cronies to support her, while acknowledging we have an exodus of teachers, yet you claim the super mostly has no control over this exodus ot teachers!
What the heck are you smoking? I hope others in the community do not rationalize as you do - otherwise nothing will change in our schools!
Well, this list has certainly expanded! And it's not even August (when a bunch of teachers have said they will give notice):

Can we add the entire school senior staff to this list just to make it complete?
It isn't just how many openings, but who left. This arrogant and short-sighted superintendent and school committee (including and especially mayor, of course, with his ridiculous Exemplary rankings and blather in support of this disgraceful "team") doesn't even care that there are no adequate (let alone equal or superior) replacements for many who have left. Many have "retired" far earlier than they wished, and for the simple reason that the teaching atmosphere is toxic and totally hostile in Melrose now, where real teaching is in fact considered a threat to the administrators. Then there are the superstars like Dr. P who said it right out, that it was untenable trying to teach under this superintendent, this principal, this department chair, this curriculum director, that they have nothing but contempt for real teaching. Many can verify all of this. Many were present at the end to honor Dr. P, including an alderman, current teachers, and a wide spectrum from the community. They all know and can testify to the enormity of this loss. But this is only one of many. There is great harm being perpetrated against the students and against those who are paying for this mess (US!). It's got to be faced and dealt with. Things really cannot get much worse. There is no morale now. Good educators are avoiding this district like the plague, as well they should. And just watch as next Tuesday night they go through the charade of "evaluating" the superintendent so that she can demand another big fat raise. Maybe one person will show up to speak and support the one member who will certainly and faithfully do her job while the rest of them perpetuate the disgrace and charade. Meanwhile that alderman and his wife who sponsored Dr P's party will sit at home or pretend that everything is still just great, and all those students who got excellent training and beautiful letters of recommendation will also be at the beach or anyplace else other than in that City Hall room where there should be a large public showing of speakers telling that disgrace of a School Committee exactly how they should evaluate this disgrace of a superintendent!
Don't you think it's a little late for filling in these positions? Does this mean our kids will have a bunch of unqualified subs for their mandated "time in learning" as of the start of the school year? And just how exactly is that acceptable? What does this say about the district's hiring and retention practices? And what about mandated Special Education services if there aren't enough providers on staff? But somehow they had the wherewithall to pay large administrative raises and on time before the school year begins! Voting NO on the override!

Where is the posting for the three 8th grade Math Teachers who are all leaving?[:-?]
Where is Taymore's position notice?
not yet.
How come nothing has been done.Is this up to date?
This list is added to each week.
A little late for these teacher postings, doncha think?
Who quit or was fired after one day? (This superintendent has had many new employees of her choosing, including her "friend" administrators, quit in revulsion and disgust almost immediately after realizing how toxic and awful the mess is.)

Most of these are paras, subs and after school positins. I only see one regular classroom teaching position
Just to note there is a severe shortage of people willing to sub in Melrose because they pay so little. like 50 a day which is basicly less than minimum wage. I have been told that sub pay has not increased in twenty years.
Two new "Academic Interventionist" teachers resigned in October. Now why do you suppose?
