Guess what? Excellence matters. Without it being recognized and celebrated, we have no benchmark for achievement or potential to aspire to. Why bust your butt if you know it doesn't matter? What we're building is a generation of underachieving wimps who have no coping skills for dealing with disappointment or failure.
