Concerning the teacher that wanted to transfer to Melrose - he does not bring his seniority with him from his other school and of course each school system has a different pay scale based on its local collective bargaining contract. You will never get a 1:1 salary having seniority in one school and not at the new school. He must have been working at a more wealthy school system than Melrose.

Concerning our police...we have a small police force so if you are young and looking for quick promotions - Melrose is not that place unless you intend it make it career in Melrose - they also augment their normal pay with paid detail so they have an opportunity to make significantly more money than teachers. Please don't lump them these city employees together in the same basket because they are not similar situations.

The teacher did come from a more affluent community, this is true. But he was not a senior guy, 5 years on the job. And the 25% difference was comparing top scale to top scale, that is what was so amazing about it. As for our Police, the issue is pay so I most certainly can lump them in together. Obviously two different jobs, but the ISSUE is the same (including Fire).

According to the city ordnance 63 Officers from the Chief on down is what is called for.....not THAT small. I feel many people in our city try to pretend we still live in a quiet bedroom community, and up until 10 or so years ago I'd agree with them. All you have to do is ask and research (like I did) and you can come to the conclusion that we need to pay our city employees better. And to do so would not be as much of a burden as city hall would lead you to believe.

By the way I can forecast where this conversation will go "oh he must be a cop, he must be a fire fighter, he must be a city hack." None of the above people, I just like to see fairness passed down to the people who educate our children and protect us. Nothing more, nothing less.

To All....we have much less than 63 police officers - and have the smallest police force of our surrounding communities - get your facts straight! And there is a big difference between the pay of police and teachers - police frequently can augment their pay with paid details.

And the other poster is correct in saying that we have a large number of very young teachers which also brings down the average teacher salary for the district - incomplete statistics can certainly make things seem more dire.

We do not have the smallest police department around. In fact not even close, I think it is you who should do your research. And the city ordnance calls for 63 officers, I know we don't have that many. And for the record I'm sure our officers would much rather have a decent base pay instead of working 60 hours a week doing extra details. And the teachers have the entire summer off what do you mean they can't make extra money!? Also I never said the teachers shouldn't be paid better! I think they should! Stop twisting my posts.

Give everyone more money - raise our taxes - and wonder why the economy is stagnant - and people need to work two jobs to survive. Hey Kudos, just a reminder that Trump is currently being audited for several tax years, it was not a random audit. He has been caught violating the tax laws before and that is why the IRS is currently all over him. Ironically, he is using this as an excuse to not release is tax returns! MBM, has never been a principal. She was a assistance principal in Haverhill. The school only went up to 4th grade. CT has put principals in that have no experience. They need to have been a teachers for almost ten years. In some states that is the only way you can apply for the job. This is a joke, and more staff will leave the Roosevelt if you don't stop the bleeding now.

Melrosians have always been cheapskates and have traditionally underfunded our schools. Sad but true.

Not true. Melrose spends about as much per child as other schools in the Middlesex league and other communities in the area. It is also not burdened with the transportation costs for busing kids to school. The reality is that millions are spent on legal fees to defend corrupt administrators who bully and intimidate families. The School administration is too lazy and inept to follow IEPs and educate challenged students, they take the easy way out and instead. They bully and intimidate these kids and their parents when they complain about their IEPs not being implemented, hoping they will just lay down or leave the city (and some do). But others fight back against the injustice and file lawsuits, MCAD or Office of Civil Rights complaints, leading to millions in legal fees, settlements and outplacements to expensive schools. But this is the way our so called school district "leaders" wants to play... dirty. And its very expensive for the tax payers and the kids too.

You are delusional if you think that there has not been any support for the schools by its citizens and city government! The Mayor has allocated additional funding to the schools for years and years giving them millions of dollars extra beyond what they wanted. Even during the teacher union contract 3 years ago - the city gave them millions of dollars extra to pay for raised.The Educational Foundation has given 10's of thousands of dollars to the schools in grant money. The problem is - the senior admin staff are corrupt - forcing the school to pay exorbitant legal fees and for PR consulting. Also the staff hires by Taymore have been terrible while at the same time she had driven out the best of our teachers. This super has been a failure for us, the community and especially the students who need help - SPED as well as others.

Roosevelt PARCC

I hate to tell you, but the Roosevelt school just ranked 46th out of 927 elementary schools in the state in this year's standardized testing. Families are going to be begging to send their kids to that school.

And just as a reference, only 5 years ago, Roosevelt ranked 308th out of 893 in the state (in 2012). So something is definitely headed in the right direction over there.

The PARCC scores are a reflection of the teachers, not the Principal. Two teachers that administered that test, SM and NI, did not return to the Roosevelt this year. Their teaching methods is one of the reasons for the high scores. MBM continues to drive out good staff and that's the problem!!

For a staff member to say I quit and lose out on ten years of hard work for the City of Melrose, that's saying a lot. MBM did nothing for this person and neither did CT. I saw many jobs posted that CT maybe could of turned around a bad situation. This is all due to MBM being the worst principal at the Rosie...

Schooldigger is nothing but a mathematical computation and ranking of the standardized test scores. You can do the math yourself off of the scores recently posted on the DOE website to see that the Roosevelt did extremely well on the PARCC. And while you do not care about websites that rank test scores, trust me, many families use test scores as their criteria to choose where to live. Melrose test scores has been improving immensely over the past 5 years and housing prices are going up too.

Look at the SATs and ACTs, the tests that actually matter for college and careers, and it is plainly evident that the district has been in a huge downward spiral, now significantly worse--at or below state averages.

The "Drill and Kill" practices CT and her hack administrators have instigated have indeed produced some spikes in PARCC and MCAS, but this does not mean that education in Melrose has improved in the ways that matter for our students. They only matter for the administrators sending this garbage to the PR firm and bucking for their next undeserved raises, and for impressing the equally fraudulent higher echelons at DESE for their eventual consultant positions. Real education, critical thinking, competent mastery of the English Language, math, science, embracing of the full arts frameworks, none of this is happening anymore except in the small pockets of educational insurgence by those teachers still dedicated first and only to the students, even when it means their own lives amount to a living hell having to deal with the incompetent monsters who are directing traffic administratively now.

Go ahead and swoon over the charlatan/realtor view of Melrose Public Schools if that helps you sleep at night, but don't think you can sell that to those of us who have been paying close attention and looking deeper than the superficial crap of which you are obviously enamored.
