Is it Time For Constitutional Reform? or Not!

For those of you who may be following our government undertaking in the past few months, you could not have missed one of the most important of all, the much touted constitutional reform in an amendment taking place. This, as you know would call on the Grenadian people to cast their vote, yea or nay and requires a two-majority of the votes cast in order to become law.

The two most prominent parts of the amendment calls for Grenada to be recognized as a Republic, which means severing all ties to "Mother England" and the establishment of a President as our Head of State to replace the office of the mow Governor General and by extension, the Queen of England.

The other part of the reform calls for the abandonment in the use of the Prevy Court/Counsel in London for all final appeals to be replaced by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

You may also recall that Prime Minister Gonsalves of Saint Vincent had proposed the same thing a few years ago but was rebuked by Vincentians even though they had voted overwhelmingly for him earlier and post his failed attemp.

In llight of this, should we surmise that the people mistrust for government extends far beyond their daily complaints and holds dear, their foundation and allegiance to a system tthat may not serve in their best interest?
